We now have 2 diverging diamond interchanges in Wisconsin. If you think roundabouts are bad, I think these things are worse. All traffic has to cross each other's path twice, unless you make a left-hand turn onto the crossroad. If you are making a left-hand turn, you now have to be in the left lane which is 3 lanes over in the case of the interchange in Janesville. but you have 2 stop and go lights to encounter before you get to that point. Great when you are a loaded semi having to start and stop trying to make the lights and 4 wheelers racing around you because you are slowing them down. Otherwise, if you continue down the road 1 more set of lights, great if you time them right sucks if traffic slows you down. I don't understand what was wrong with full clover leaf ramps unto these highways. Traffic never had to cross each other. I guess the only big deal is getting people to slow down for the ramps and not running off them in the snow. Stupid people and stupid engineers ruin it for everyone.

I was down in Houston TX and first hated their no cloverleafs in freeway , but a underpass for freeway off ramp and a one way road on each side of freeway .
Straight exit to a two way road with stop light , straight entrance to freeway from one way road . Makes since once you get use to it .
WI with 2 roundabouts on bridge overpass (one each end ) then another roundabout for frontage road spaced a little further off - YOUR Dizzy trying to figure out how to get there from here

Missery started with Odd interchanges a couple decades back, Diverging Diamond, Round About, no overpass off ramps/on ramps, and then are the classic Jersey Barriers on steroids on too narrow right of ways abutted to houses on Outside with massive walls to cut the noise and those four foot tall, poured in place barriers with no shoulder to the inside barely able to catch drainage if drains were not choked out as cannot clean them adequately.

Interstate highway system is absolutely schitt anymore, really do not enjoy them as rough, bad planning, poorer development and always the cons by politicians thinking will build economies in trouble by advancing roads projects leading to more move outs than move ins. St Louis has four bridges of worthless value from downtown into Illinois, all within Five mile distance.

A diamond has recently been completed near me on I380. Ive used it, not particularly impressed but whatever. These things have come about because today's traffic just can't be bothered with having to slow down for existing structures. Fewer and fewer actually stop at stop signs anymore. Traffic engineers have acquiesced to this and stepped up to provide something "better". They need something to do. Granted, I do like the roundy round built near me but curse those that don't understand their function.

Dallas, TX takes a totally different approach.

Take a look at the intersection of E-W I30 and N-S I35E.

I think I counted '7' different levels of roadway.

No matter which direction you want to go, you travel a minimum 60 mph.

Certainly a lot of acres of asphalt !

two examples of local idiots, er,, 'engineers'......

1) Hwy #6 to Hwy #403 merges into the FAST lane of 3 on the 403 !!!. FYI this is a very, very busy chunk of 6 lane highway here in Hamilton,10s of 1,000s of cars and ugh trucks...every day. yes , 'they' decided merging at a crawl into the FAST (60MPH+) lane was a good idea...

2) Peter's Corners roundabout. To solve the traffic 'problem' at Hwys 5 and 8, 'they' spent 8 million plus for a  two lane roundabout and ADDED 2 sets of traffic lights, before and after the  roundabout. Naturally 'they' didn't know that 53' trailers USE these highways so it took all of 3 weeks before carnage occoured(hmm..car and 53'er can't be side by side, go figure..... Sadly the less than a million buck true solution would have been to buy a 100' strip of the farmer's section and put in a straight road...NO roundabout needed......

3) latest project ,10+ years in the making is to 'rework'  Clappison's Corners ( Hwys 5 and 6 ). It involves a bridge over hwy 6 to allow hwy5 to flow east west, BLASTING the escarpment to LOWER hwy 6  to get UNDER the new bridge and several access roads to gas station and local shops.Currently IF there's no accidents, rush hour ends around 9:30( 'rush' being stop and go to Hwy 403's FAST lane..) HUGE quarries up the road,so LOTS of unskilled dump truck drivers on #5  a 2 lane hwy, makes for interesting commutes. How anyone does it  and not get killed is a miracle, though one dump trucker 'sneezed' went off road, totalled a main feed hydro pole, 1,000s without power for 10-12 hours.

last one.... cloverleaf at Mohawk road to hwy 403 has only 3 leaves. Yup, eastbound Mohawk to south hwy 403  leaf is MISSING......no wonder local village's main drag is busy from 6AM until midnight, every day......

idiots......

round abouts seem to work great where there is little traffic. No need to stop and wait when NOBODY is coming from the side directions.. If there is a LOT OF TRAFFIC, its hard to get on and off... at that point the stop lights might be a better idea.

I hae never been on the double diamond.. Had to GOOGLE it and read up.. Seems like it takes a lot less ground and a lot less concrete to make, and  "most" of the roads are somewhat STRAIGHT and not 270 degree travel like you do on a clover leaf...Watched a you tube movie and it "SEEMS" to work out pretty good..they say it can pass MORE CARS PER HOUR.... I think the main thing would be getting use to it after doing the clover leaf for 50 years.

One nice big single lane round about is pretty nice and flows traffic pretty well. We have 2 that are too small getting off the highway close to home. There is a large 2+ lane and you approach onside coming down a pretty good hill so if you are a semi slowing down coming down the hill, you have to wait for cars passing you on the inside. Which means coming to a complete stop. The last is where they have 3 roundabouts in a row. Semis are slow getting thru them and people get anxious to pass. Had a 6 wheeler box truck pass me on the inside of the second one this week. He was up to the back corner of my trailer. He should have stopped, of course I did, and he flew on by.🙁

In most new construction highways/tollways in DFW Metroplex are concrete because of the heat.  Also, in most cases, I think about 1/3 can be fed money.  I think the tollways are privately financed.  They are great with CA turnarounds under the bridges.  Traffic there, especially rush hour can be a challenge if you're not patient.  Here is KC Metro some round abouts are low profile so if you can't make the turns, you plow straight thru.
