I'm looking at a new to me 2016 F150 XLT that is  low mileage  and really clean but am kinda concerned with the headlights. This trk has got the worst headlights I've seen in a long time. I've read before that the F150's starting with the 2010 have "exceptional" headlights but this one does not. I've checked out some Youtube videos but is obvious  those videos were made by the light vendors,,
Anyone got any history with the F150 in those years? What bulbs to buy,,??

Joe... i think there are 2-3 different variations... My 2013 has HID .. VERY BRIGHT and they shoot WAY OUT THERE .. i think these are OPTIONAL , not the STANDARD .

Standard might have been Halogen ?? ...... lots of people selling LEDs now as aftermarket.. Mixed reviews on them..

Joe, is it the bulbs or is it that the face surface of the lights have faded & gotten hazy with age? That's a common problem with lots of headlights from about 2000 on. The "plastic" they're made from discolors with age.
We had them do that on cars, pickups and trucks at work. You can buy kits at parts store to clean them. Won't last forever but gets a few years from them.

Hey Steve,,the PO mentioned that he has had to "polish" the lens a few times as headlights were pizz poor from new,,,So,,trk prolly had Halogen from new,,,?,,Lens are currently nice and clear but light output going down a dark country road is Very Pizz poor at best and with my poor old eyes,,,I have got to get something better ASAP,,!!
I read a very informative article from "AutoBulbsdirect.com.uk/blog/simplecarbulbguide
The article states that one of the main reason some people retrofit to the HID is a "Styling" feature due to the "White" light produced by the HID bulb,,,? I do not care about the style ,,I want lots of light going down them dark roads,,,,!!!!

Did your trk have the HID bulbs from factory?

There "IS" or "may" be a point of concern in the article is that they refer to a possible  "CANBus" Error when retrofitting to the more powerful HID bulbs,,,??

2013 FACTORY HID headlights ( i have that)  use a DIFFERENT WIRE HARNESS setup... If you got that, your LOCKED IN to use the HID...... If you had HALOGEN then it could have been changed to LED or "aftermarket" HID .. which is not all that great.... Probably better to stick with the HALOGEN.

If it is AFTERMARKET HID, i think there will be a little "converter box" attached to the side of the bulb to make it cooperate with the  Halogen type wire harness..

Not a good explaination, but the FACTOR"Y HID does NOT use a HO- LO filiment type bulb ... it uses one filament with a COVER PLATE to cut down the light for LO beam... at least that is how the 2013 works.

----------
Probably BEST to pull one bulb and see if it is LED or Halogen... probably NOT HID on the 2016.

Mr GOOGLE says...

No, the 2016 Ford F150 does not come with HID bulbs as standard equipment, but you can upgrade to them with an aftermarket kit. HID headlights use xenon gas and an electrical arc to produce a bright, white light. They are typically more expensive to repair than halogen bulbs, but they last longer and require less power.

You can tell if your truck has HID headlights by looking inside the bulb for a glass bubble. If you want to upgrade your F150's headlights, you can consider a conversion kit like the Ford F150 (15-17) Ultra HID (Low Beam) Conversion Kit from Headlight Revolution.

I put the oem stock headlight bulbs in my 2011 F150. The 'improved' after market ones the previous owner had installed had terrible illumination.

Well,,I spent a good bit of time today checking out the many vendors of headlight kits  and what is concerning is the huge price difference from $600 for a "KIT" from one vendor all the way to $78 from another vendor with 4 of the vendors saying their kits are  "complete" and require nothing else,,,which cannot be wholly true,,,,!!!
I even joined a F150 Forum but there did not seem to be any agreement on the subject ,,,no two of the members agreed with the others,,,,SHEEESH,,,,!!!

Hay DJ.. does that F150 have 'fog' lights ? If so replace those yellow bulbs with intense LED ones..... or add a 'light bar'... either option HAS to be cheaper than replacing the stock(?) lights.

And you to can be one of those that needs to have his lights shot out. Vehicles need to have a photocell sensor that will automaticly dim the headlights when approaching oncoming vehicles for those steering wheel holders too stupid or lazy to dim the headlights.
If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
