My 8070 pto clutch is beginning to slip, will it come out from the bottom? How much trouble is it going to be?

It comes out the back. I believe that you have to pull the actual PTO shaft out first so that the drive gear can be dropped. Then the clutch pack assembly can be removed. You will need to remove the bottom plate to drop the drive gear.

You know what?? In 45+ years I have fixed ONE 7000/8000 PTO clutch. It was an 8030 that was unplugging a tub grinder and it was abused badly. Are you sure your torque limiter isn't slipping??? have you tested the PTO clutch pressure ??

Have not checked anything yet, was mowing and pto started slipping, tractor seems to be pulling fine. Hope to find time to check it out soon. I was just thinking about fixing it and I always think of the worst case senario.

We have never had a PTO clutch slip unless it was a cable - spool issue.  Bullet proof.  As Doc said - always turns out to be torque limiter. Then there is always the first time....

My Buddy has a 7045 that went to slipping bad. He tested all the pressures and it was definitely leaking somewhere because couldn’t keep the pressure past 50 #. He pulled the back cover off and found the sealing ring broke in pieces, clutch shaft sealing ring groove wore excessively and the back cover where the sealing ring was also wore. Put a new sealing ring in it and it still wouldnt seal. Found a used shaft and back cover. A mechanic is in the process of replacing the shaft, seal ring and back cover. Test your pressures and follow the path it leads you down. Just a note, this tractor had a ton of pto hrs on a cotton gin I believe I believe he said from the previous owner

The steel sealing ring on that 7045 has to do with the pto brake pressure. The pto clutch piston seals are inside the clutch pack. As others have said, I can only remember one pto clutch pack failure. They are normally a very reliable unit.

His 7045 has 350# of brake pressure when he would kick the pto on the other port went to 50# and the one that was 350 went to 0. Sealing ring came out in pieces and badly worn groove and back plate. So I’m not sure what the deal is but it’s getting torn apart

The more that I think about it, that little steel sealing ring does affect clutch pressure. I believe that clutch pressure goes through a drilling in the center of the shaft and then applies the piston. Since the shaft is turning, it needs to seal the oil pressure at that rear plate.

Yes we determined the clutch pressure goes through the clutch shaft but that oil can leak past at the sealing ring area. There was nothing there to hold pressure any longer. Even tried a new sealing ring but the sealing surfaces were worn excessively as well. It did gain pressure but not much.

The guy working on it is an Allus mechanic and he was shocked seeing the wear on the shaft and rear plate. Said never seen that before.

8070 has 500# standby pressure idiling and at full throttle. What should clutch and brake pressure be?

Clutch and brake psi should be the same. Have to look in my book but I'm thinking 250 to 300 psi.

If someone does have to remove the rear clutch cover/plate be extremely careful and aware of what is there. That cover is 2 pieces and there is an ear that can be cracked off if you pry on it. Be careful and diligent when disassembling that rear cover. Study it closely before disassembling it. The mechanic pointed it out to me and I probably would have pryed on that ear and broke it

8070 standby pressure 450#,  brake pressure 340#, clutch pressure 70#. Unhooking mower and washing tractor now then undecided what to do next, what do yall think?

If brake pressure is 340....clutch pressure should be 340. Remove the rear cover (CAREFULLY) and check out the sealing ring on the end of the shaft and then air check the clutch itself.

One clutch plate broken into 3 pieces, all other clutch and spacer plates smoked too. Got it it back together and going again! Tell more about it later.
