If you can post measurements and a photo of the joint, I can probably tell you from my books.

picture is not going to help... u-joints are specked by the bearing cap OD and the WIDTH from one edge of the cap to the other.... ... Probalby 20 different sizes or more... get those numbers and you can cross reference.

Mine looks just like that with the caps that bolt over the yoke. I haven't gotten the machine yet that's why I asked if anyone would know what u-joint it would need. I'm getting it this weekend.

Hi guys-I have a "newer" TL12 with the D17 engine.
The driveshaft between the engine and transmission has been completely cobbled (even the tire has been removed). What I want to know is whether this driveshaft has a slip joint in it or is it a solid connection? I have included an image from a TL12 with a 6 cylinder engine showing a solid connection. My parts book does not show what this looks like with the 4 cylinder engine. Thanks in advance. ![]() Edited by nowaktj - 27 Jun 2024 at 4:22am |

almost EVERY drive shaft has to have a slip joint to make up for minor difference in component installation, or movement of the trans / axle / engine.. Would be hard to build ANYTHING with a solid length shaft unless everything was perfect dimension.

The t l's have a rubber tire in a drum Adjacent to the engine's flywheel. My question is Whether they have a slip joint when it has the four cylinder engine. 6 cylinder do not.

I am curious why they went to this design, on the group 3 Loaders (the redesign in 1960). The earlier group 2 loaders were coupled directly to the converter shaft with a splined collar bolted to the crankshaft and flywheel. It seems counter intuitive to add this driven tire, (which has shown to wear out vs the direct drive) and universal joint shaft which was necessitated by moving the converter away from the engine adding another wear item.

When someone shifted from forward to reverse in a split second must shock the whole drivetrain system. I wonder if the splined driveshaft wasn't living?

possibly but it goes through a converter so not much shock transferred. the original coupler showed no wear on my machine.

Found a manual at the Orange Spectacular and it shows a tube of a driveshaft taking up the extra distance when the 4 cyl D17 engine is installed.
