After sitting under a carport for every bit of 10+ years, I finally decided to work on my father's CA. When I was young, this tractor, with a Woods belly mower, was our dedicated mowing tractor until my dad retired and purchased his first zero turn. It sat ever since. My dad passed away in 2018 and I hate seeing it sit there wasting away. I cleaned the carb, points, etc. and it fired right up and gave me the desire to enjoy it more. The generator is shot and I have everything in hand to do a 12v conversion. After that, I plan on using the tractor for some open area mowing at another property while also working on it to get it back to her former glory.
I never knew the CA came with the hand clutch like the WD models. I was researching one night and found out about it. Turns out the hand clutch handle was never on this tractor while we had it. Who knows the prior history of the machine. We would have to raise the mower deck while moving or while in neutral which at times was a big pain but figured that's just how this old machine operated. Knowing this now, I would like to get the hand clutch back in operation again. I put a steel rod into the opening to test and the clutch did not budge. I assume it is frozen. Is it a huge undertaking to replace or refurbish the hand clutch on these models? I can live without it but I like everything working like it is supposed to.
When I can figure out how to properly post pictures, I'll get a few uploaded.

Thank you for the link. I agree that 70 years old and not disengaged
for about 40 of those years means that the clutch is most definitely
frozen solid. Not sure if this is within my realm of ability so
hopefully I can get it out easily and rebuilt.

They were a poor excuse for "live" power PTO compared to the WD-series. Don't waste your time. Many have been removed from a CA to eliminate troubles.

Are you sure the generator is bad or does it just need to be "flashed"?

I'm sorry DrAllis but I rebuilt my CA hand clutch by using this forum and don't regret one bit of it. Only wish would be that the hand clutch and handle is on oppisite side of hydralic lever.

The hand clutch is what made the CA such a great small tractor and why the Series I d10/12 tractors were a step backward for small tractors. It may not have been as good of a design as the WD tractor however the ones that say they that the axle clutch needs to be removed or bolted, don't know how to properly work on them. I know from personal experience that the axle clutch, when working properly will make a factory fiber disc engine clutch slip. As with most things that are 70+ years old; when they have been abused and neglected they won't work properly. If you want it to work properly, FIX IT PROPERLY.

I bet it needed to be flashed. Realizing that now, I had already pulled it to prepare for the 12V conversion.

I have never so much as even touched a CA but my Father-in-law grew up on one; to hear him tell it that little tractor could leap tall buildings at a single bound. I ran his old WD quite a bit and I learned to truly appreciate its hand clutch since all of my equipment had rear-mounted hydraulics that required stopping, putting the transmission in neutral, engaging the clutch, etc. My Dad's D2 Cat was like that. Bleah.
