I recently got a 160 with the 460 loader on it. It has been working great, but today when I went to use it, the loader would barely move and is very jerky.  I made sure the fluid was topped up and tightened the hose clamps on the return line, but still barely working. Is there a filter on these somewhere? Could it be my pump going out? Thanks for any input.

Loader oil is in the loader frame tower ???

Yes, the loader has it's own hydraulic system, and the reservoir is in the frame of the loader.

There is a suction screen in the bottom of that loader reservoir. Maybe it should be removed and checked for cleanliness. Cost you 2 1/2 gallons of oil.

I have a 460 for my 160 also. They made 2 different types, does yours run off a pump on the crank shaft or off the 4 remotes on the rear of the tractor? Only the self contained with the pump running off the crankshaft had the tank built into the loader frame.

Sorry I read right past your post that it’s self contained. So the hydraulic system of the tractor is separate. If your able to check the screen like DOC said and it’s clear then check your suction hose for leaks or possible dry rot. Make sure all clamps are tight. Pump may have went bad and need to be rebuilt.

You’re missing one key detail. Two totally different systems   Sounds like his 160 is set up the same as mine. The reservoir is the left vertical loader frame piece, the pump is driven off the front crank pulley with a sketchy roller chain connector.   Both times my main hydraulic system died the loader worked fine. Curious to know the condition of the seals on the loader’s ram it could be leaking by just pushing oil from one end of the barrel to the other and not moving the loader as well as it should.

Check the roller chain and sprocket at the pump and make sure it is adjusted correctly. I had to get a new chain for mine. My AGCO dealer had it on hand.

Well, the filter was the problem. It was about as nasty as I have ever seen any filter. I cleaned it out and filled it back up with fluid and now it works great. Thanks for the help. I have a manual for a 460 loader, but it is for the version that is run from the tractor remotes. How do you figure out how much fluid to put in this one? I have all the cylinders as short as they get, and fill it up a ways, but when the fluid heats up, it still splashes out of the top sometimes. My other question is about the return/suction line. It is about time to replace all the hydraulic hoses. I have most of the high pressure hoses, but I haven't found a place to buy the return line yet. Anybody know of a place that sells that? Thanks for your help, it's nice to have the loader back to work!

The SUCTION line is the large hose. My local hydraulic hose place would have that kind of hose on hand. The oil will vomit out when it's overfull. So, eventually it will quit vomiting and then you are at the correct level.

Because all 4 cylinders are double acting, the oil level in the Reservoir never really changes.
When oil is fed in to one end of a cylinder, the same amount of oil is drawn in through the opposite end of the cylinder.

On my 415 loader I keep the Hyd. oil level around 8 to 10 inches from the top.

Well, I was hoping to avoid oil vomit, but I guess that is one way to know when your oil level is right. I usually get my hydraulic hose from Napa, but they don't have the suction line. I guess I'll have to see if I can find a more specialized hydraulic shop around here.
