My 4W-305 is a hard shifter-maybe 60% of the time.The other 40% works like it should. Tried different shifting patterns to see if there's a solution or if I can identify when it gets difficult. Tried different clutching. Full to the floor (into the transmission brake zone) and then clutching outside the zone. Nothing pops up as the problem or the solution. I'm stumped. If it's the clutch I haven't even checked if replacements are available. Rather it not be a worn clutch problem -LoL

What could the possible causes be?

define 'hard shifter'  grinding ? gear on gear and not slipping in ? can't move the shifter ?  will not all the way in gear ?

All of the above but at different times. Turn the machine off and it goes into the gears and range quite nicely. Often it's the best way to get it going:-turn it off, put it in gear, start it and go. The one variable that seems to "sometimes" make a difference is when the tractor is in use and well warmed up. But can't say this is anywhere close to all the time.

I say it's adjustment. Follow that procedure including the pressure gauge. You will never shift up without clashing while moving.

We usually find since there are no syncros in the tranny one pushes the pedal into the brake mode, then while holding shift lever in the gear one wants wants, let out on the clutch and as the shaft moves it can best be put in gear then.

Going to try both of your suggestions. I'm assuming the adjustment procedure can be found in the Service manual?

Dale, have not run into your issue with my 305, however, you describe my 7580 issues pretty much to a T, i replaced the clutch/power director cable, helped kind of.  But when i replaced the bushings and the worn shaft in the power director valve mechanism, oh boy!  I have new a tractor. works like it should and every time.  Might look and see if your 305 has worn out bushings in it

I would assume it has the bushings, but was unable to find them in a parts diagram. If there are bushings, replacing them will make it shift like a new tractor.
