Got problem with starter mounted switch. Mine is not making good connection when I pull the rod to starter. Removed switch and under switch there is a copper looking piece that makes starter spin when 12v is applied. Has anyone tried to replace that piece of copper w a stud ( like old ford truck starter) and do away w the switch altogether imo it would last much longer then. Original switch is trouble waiting to happen imo. Let me know I have a good electric shop near me I don’t think he would charge me much. Would need a start button and selonoid and cables should be All parts needed.

Yes... a GOOD shop could put a stud in place of the copper block.... Might not be something YOU want to do at home... But a shop.. OK.

Take it to a local shop.  They can go through the starter to make sure everything is working 100 percent.

Good move moving to a solenoid and getting rid of the mechanical switch. Those mechanical switches were great for taking out the Armature with low voltage issues.
Your local shop should be able to remove the pad and install a stud. Have them mount the solenoid right on the Starter. Run some wires and your good to go.

I did it on my Model C starter; I just soldered a copper bolt right on top of the lug. So far so good.

i did just what steve said  on my wd  a few years ago  ,when you go to drill and tap the case for screws to mount the soliniod make sure it is positioned in the right place , mine had a prestolite with a soliond on it that my grandfather put on when i was  a kid so it was already wired with a starter button.  i ran the 6v prestolite on 12v for long time maybe twenty years  but the 12v delco is much better.
