Hi, I have a 7040 and was wanting to know if the differential gears and pinion gears can be inspected without dismantling the rear end? Also can the pinion gears be replaced without having to remove the rear end housing from the tractor?

Probably could be inspected with a bore scope. aka: inspection camera

Draining the oil and removal of the left hand filter assembly will gain you pretty good access to giving it a looksee. Nothing can be replaced without disassembly of the rear end. My question is why are you concerned ?? I think I've repaired 2 or 3 of 7030/40 differentials since 1975 and they were all due to very low oil levels and abuse. Keep the bottom sight glass FULL all the time and I keep the top one full too.

As I recall, the ring gear and differential carrier assembly can be taken out the top to service the spider gears without splitting the tractor. Jack the cab up,remove the valve stack, lift chest, and both final drives. If the actual ring gear was bad, then a split is required to replace the ring and pinion as a matched set. I imagine that someone has just replaced a damaged ring gear without changing the pinion sometime,but I can't imagine the pinion not being in bad shape if the ring gear was bad.

Thanks, when draining the fluid in the rear end I found a small amount of metal flakes and a small piece of what I think is a gear tooth. This tractor is new to me and I’m trying to figure out how to inspect what maybe wrong without taking the whole thing apart yet. The tractor operated fine and didn’t seem to make any odd noises.

There are people that get kind of anal about finding cuttings on drain plugs when maybe the drain plug hasn't been cleaned in the last 20 years. You can go searching for the needle in the haystack if you want, but will probably come up empty. Change the oil and filters (AGCO filters) and clean the drain plugs. Run it for a year and check the drain plugs again and I'll bet they will be just fine.

I agree, but there is a piece of gear tooth that is more substantial than “cuttings”.

A sliver of a gear tooth isn't common, but not uncommon. I know of a 7020 that had a planetary final drive "sliver" of a gear tooth in an oil change and that was 27 years ago. Tractor still running without ANY issue. Like I say...give it a year and recheck.

Run it for a few weeks.Buy an extra plug and swap quickly one at a time. Then check each plug. Should be able to do all 3 and not lose much oil. May give you some more info.

If a broken gear tooth came out of the transmission drain I would stop running the tractor and pull the trans apart.

I had to split my 8070 and change two gears...The broken piece that came out during an oil change only was a fraction of what was damaged.

Try getting a look at it if possible.
