I am having trouble finding the correct Tach for My Allis Chalmers 185, I have purchased 2 tachs and both read RPM slow. Serial number 13991 all original, I am replacing the original tach because the hour meter is not working but the rpm works just fine, has good cable, has 12 and 45 gears, has original alternator and drive, has 4 inch pulley, my guess is that they made 2 different tachs for this tractor and have superseded to one tach now

...and there are also a lot of aftermarket companies importing poor quality gauges and tachometers and selling them as original equipment replacements.

I totally support sending your factory Tach to one of the recommended service shops for a repair/cleanup and you will end up with the best possible outcome, factory quality and appearance

My 1963 D17 Diesel Tach stopped working and the face plate had a bit of a sunburn. I was able to carefully open up the Tach case using curved needle nose pliers and a flat head screwdriver. Extreme care and patience needed to avoid spoiling the metal and glass. The needle pulls off upwards gently

Once I had it apart carefully cleaning of the moving parts, oiling of the gears etc and had it working smoothly ready for another 60 years. Cleaned the face plate with water wet Q tip several times and it looked okay

Reassemble carefully using the screwdriver and pliers   Can hardly see the repair marks / scars. NOT Show quality but operating just fine. Time invested 4 hours Cost sore fingers

I was happy with the results and I enjoy this type of project

My father/brothers who still farm would have sent the Tach to the Pro’s in a heart beat

Hope this posting helps others with options available

Don’t waste your money on aftermarket tachs. Send it to Star Speedometer, he has repaired 3 for me, they look and work like new. Those tachs are precision pieces and Haim will have it back working like it should.
