Im putting my D17 diesel back together and as I put my belts on I noticed how close the fan blade comes to the air cleaner. The air cleaner bolts to the head so it’s not like I can move it. I guess I didn’t notice this before because the fan blade wasn’t in this position before when I took it apart. Looks like a 1/8” clearance. Anyone out there that has a series 1 diesel mind taking a glance and let me know what they see?

Are all the blades showing the same clearance?  Maybe a bent fan blade if they are not.

Is there an outside chance that the fan on backwards, and the offset has the blades closer to the canister.

My bad Steve, I didn't spend enough time studying the photo and thinking of what way the engine rotated. Had brain fog I guess

If you put it back like it was it must have been that way before. Clearance means it's not touching! Lol. The blade should flex fwd in use if anything. Where's your faith?

Does look very close. Or is it camera angle? Was there a spacer under it? Maybe was lost over the years.

Fan appears to on backwards. Engine rotation is clockwise if I’m not mistaken.
I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

The picture looks like mine, about the same clearance between the fan and the air cleaner, the fan is the same as mine. Been that way for years.       Rick

Thanks Rick for looking at yours. I did verify all blades are the same gap when I rotated the fan. So, I will feel better knowing it is correct.
Appreciate everyone for their input.

After a few months of being dismantled for repairs, new paint, new wiring harness, pump work, I fired her back up yesterday. No issue at the clearance of the fan and breather. Fan ran straight and true. Just really surprised at how close it is and that I did not notice it before.
