Need a good way to keep crows out of a composter. We compost our dead chickens in bins attached to the stack house (litter shed). Damn crows keep digging in the piles and pulling birds out and eating parts of them and leaving the rest behind. I shot one and now if I get any where near they're gone before I can shoot another. Thought about fencing and gates on the bins but the area is 16' x 80' and fencing and gates would have to start at 5' off the ground and go up about 6' on one side and 9' on the other. Also, gates would make things a real pain when it comes time to clean the bins out. Anybody got a good way to keep crows out? Would love to just shoot them but they're smart enough to get out before I get to where I feel comfortable shooting

Buddy in IL had intriguing method, Do NOT shoot to kill the First one, let them get brave awhile, and as one gets close, Wing it. As the others hear it cawing for aid they will arrive, IN DROVES. Had a few would pick thru his garden so we sat drinking beer and waiting, first one then a few and he shot the closest, others flew out a ways. Squawking and raising hell the first one could not fly, flopped a lot and the Others CAME BACK, was seemingly un-sportsmen like but we killed all but three out of 14. The others never came back.

Yeah a little unsportsmanlike but at this point I don't really care. We have to clean up whatever mess they leave as per our contract. I've told them not to but they don't listen. They listened when Mr. Remington started talking though. May have to let them get back to brave before I can try your trick.

Used to hunt them with a E-call. Never shoot the first one. Claim it was a scout. And had to call them right away before they started their daily doings. WI does have a season on them so you can't legally hunt them all year. They are considered migratory birds! I worked for an exterminator once and we would mix treated corn with whole corn for pigeons. Didn't kill them but made them sick enough not to come back.

I have 3 pear trees, one tree is a desert pear, crows get almost every fruit off that tree every year. As for killing them, darn near impossible, I'm convinced a crow can spot an evil intention in a man's eye farther than a Southern Baptist preachers wife.

I completely forgot about calls. We have a season for them here too. First Saturday in November through the end of February. I'm thinking this would be considered crop damage though and I'm thinking season doesn't apply in that case. I'll have to check on that |

Crows are smart, they often use a lookout, like when eating roadkill, the scout will scream CAW CAW, when it sees a car coming! Too bad, they cant say truck...

Drill a small hole through a kernel of corn. Tie a horse hair or fishing twine through the hole and tie it.
The crows eat the corn and will claw themselves to death, trying to get the hair out of their throat.

Don't shoot the first one, as has been said: they send in a scout. An owl decoy and electronic call will bring them in. Maybe you can find someone local that is trustworthy and likes to shoot crows that could help out. Also after you kill a few hang them up near the building, that seems to deter the others.

I have heard of hanging a dead one up to deter the others but that might cause a problem with my bird contact. Don't know but I'll have to ask on that one |

If you were closer I would take you up on that offer. But it is a one done deal. Shoot what you can at one time because they leave really quick. It is fun to do though if you like to wing shoot.
