My wife was kind enough to mow the yard before we left on vacation with the 919. After mowing for over an hour she called me and said she was smelling burnt grass so she shut the mower down thankfully. I arrived a half hour later and checked the mower over. I could smell a hint of burnt grass but could not see anything obvious. Grabbed the 917 and finished mowing.
Finally got around to see what was going on today, figuring the main drive pulley had went bad. Turned the pulley and it seemed to be fine although a little resistance could be felt. Pulled the drive belt covers and found out why she smelled burnt grass. It was packed tight with grass clippings and down near the base of the deck around the center arbor it was burnt. Only reason it didn’t catch fire was due to the belt shields suffocating the fire. I acquired this mower last year from my cousin. It has done very well mowing. After removing the grass I found out where it was coming from, he had patched the deck due to rusting. I removed what was left of the patch and made a new patch. Deck is now too thin to weld a new patch so I bolted my new patch. Guess I need to start searching for a new deck at some point, patch should buy me some time. So thankful she shut it down when she did. |

It pays to remove the belt guard and clean it out once in awhile. I do it every fall before storing for the winter, at least. Maybe if I ever get settled in here and have a little more free time we can increase that to 2/3 times a year! I'm in the same boat with the deck on my 782, went through it a couple of years ago. Brazed in patches and filled small holes. I would really like to find a good 50C deck for it, or two. The other 782 has a 44" on it and I have more grass than that. maybe I should just but another 720, hmmm?

That's why I do not run with deck covers. I can blow off all the grass from on top of the deck. With covers, it does not get done often enough. Den

Yeah, I leave the covers off my BobCat 60" ZTR-220... all they do is make grass pack up tighter, and prevent it from getting blown out. Sad thing is, my neighbor has a Toro 60" that, no matter what we cut through, it does NOT accumulate grass on the deck. Dunno why... it just doesn't. Now, that being said, the Toro has the WORST deck drive system ever... it has a horizontal shaft engine, with clutch facing rear... two sheaves below to transition the belt forward, and then that SINGLE BELT threads through the WHOLE DANGED DECK... it's like 148" long. All 'ya hafta do to throw that belt, is sneeze while you're walking towards the (non running) mower, and it'll throw it. Worse yet, when it throws the belt, it always throws it across some sharp edge and slices it apart. So I'm lookin' for a low-profile 90 degree gearbox that I can mount to the deck, for one deck drive belt, and then use a PTO shaft and two U-joints from the deck, aft to a bearing block, and a much shorter V belt to the clutch... So far, I haven't found one I like, so I might hafta MAKE the 90 degree gearbox...

I left them off my 917 for awhile, as said it makes it easy to clean. But I almost stuck my foot in the drive belt to retrieve something in the yard. Put them back on after that. Yeah I know turn the pto off first. But years of just stepping down on the deck to remove something almost got my foot injured.

I try not to ever mow grass when it’s wet. One of the reasons why they rust out. Can’t complain, I got 40 years out of the 917 deck and this one is 37 years old.

Well, went to run the 919 today. It’s been almost 4 weeks since my wife last mowed since we have had no rain. Just cutting down the weeds mostly. Apparently the pto clutch went out also. Ole 917 came to the rescue to knock it out. Will see what it looks like when I tear it apart.
