I have not been on for awhile but after 50 years messing with these B's I am stumped.  I have set the gov linkage and carb linkage to specs but I do not have much power but I can move the carb linkage and it will rev up. I have went thru the gov but no change. Please help before I am bald. Allis

if you can move to carb linkage and the engine speeds up... then the adjustment is not right, or the governor is broken...

Push the Throttle lever to WIDE OPEN.. go look at the carburetor and see if the  throttle arm is all the way forward... throttle Plate WIDE OPEN....apparently yours is not...  if not..

Disconnect the carburetor rod going forward to the governor cross over arm at the left side behind the radiator... with the THROTTLE wide open, the governor arm is FORWARD.. pull the carburetor rod all the way forward and see if the rod aligns with the hole in the  cross over arm... if not..

Go back to the THROTTLE LEVER and loosen up the set screw and see if the ROD to the governor will move forward and move the governor arm FURTHER... ( did you move this rod/ screw at some point ??) ..... now check the alignment of carburetor rod into the governor arm.....

In the end, the gov arm should be full forward ... and you might bend it to get the carburetor rod to align to the hole.

make sure the governor cross over arm behind the radiator is free to move full stroke when you move the Throttle level ( at the console)... and that the arm does not hit the thermostat housing or drag fan belt / pulley.

I think you are right and I will check tomorrow after my lasik eye app and let you know.  I have had and worked on many B's in the last 50 years but my age is catching up with me. Allis

I have done everything correctly but still the same problem and I replaced the govenor with one that has no screw on the mag side and I noticed the the repair manual said that they made two govenors one with a screw and one without.  Will that make a difference ?

no difference in the governor..

You said you have the throttle lever WIDE OPEN... and you can grab the carburetor arm and MOVE IT FORWARD and get more RPM... something is wrong...

Go to the THROTTLE LEVER... Loosen the little square set screw holding the long rod and push the rod forward 1/8 - 1/4 inch and reset the screw... What happens now ?

I have always disconnected the carb rod at the governor cross over arm and check the linkage at that point.... Worked 9 out of 10 times......... A couple months back i changed some linkage on a tractor and it would not go to HIGH RPM.. Checked the carb/ gov several times...... finally went back to the throttle lever and move that rod  less than 1/4 inch and problem solved... NEVER had that problem before.... thats why i suggested looking at it if your not getting full RPM............... maybe, maybe not ? ... but if the ARM on the carb is not WIDE OPEN.. thats a problem.

Sorry for not getting back sooner had a lot come up.  I have tried everything that has been mentioned and still no power but can move the lever on carb and get plenty of power. I have been working on these engines for over 50 years and cannot figure it out.  Can I bend the govenor arm one way or another to get more power ? Thanks for all the help and I am going to try again tomorrow. AllisConfused

Bob... think about it.... If you can "move the throttle arm" on the carburetor, then then linkage is not pulling it open.. SOMETHING is not adjusted right. .... yes, the governor arm behind the radiator can be bent FORWORD to pull the carb rod OPEN... if that is the problem.. If the GOVERNOR arm is BACKING OFF while running, then you might have problems on the OTHER SIDE of the engine.... Throttle lever at seat WIDE OPEN ?  with it WIDE OPEN is  it pulling the arm on the governor FULLY and STRETCHING the spring ?... something in there is not adjusted right or Bent.

Bob... here is a photo of the linkage on my B. I have pulled the throttle lever wide open ( push forward).. It rotates the arm on top of the governor clockwise and the backside pulls the spring  backward toward the seat. My spring starts to move at 1/3 throttle..  Photo is wide open so spring is stretched out quite a bit... The front of the spring pulls on the Governor arm which makes the opposite side ( behind the radiator) move forward. My governor rod behind the radiator sets basically above the fan pulley.. If i go to the other side of the tractor, the carburetor arm is FULL FORWARD against the stop.

All of this is with the tractor NOT RUNNING... see if your carburetor arm is FULL FORWARD with the engine off... see that the spring is stretched out GOOD...

Now start the tractor and put at full throttle.. is the spring still Stretched out ?  Can you twist the governor arm clockwise toward the spring ( like it needs more tension) ?  That should rotate the governor arm behind the carburetor forward and PULL on the carburetor arm further.....

IF THE GOVERNOR IS WORKING.... then you have an adjustment off somewhere.. or spring is too weak.

Normally if the governor fails inside, it goes wide open.. not restricted speed.

Bob, I have seen (too many times) where someone has attached a spring on the link rod to the carburetor, that shouldn't be there !! In your case, there should be no spring on the left side of the engine period !!

I removed the governor cover and checked everything and it is good.  When throttle is 1/3 forward my spring is starting to spread and govenor lever is over pulley and there is a spring on the carb linkage and this dummy put it there.  I am going to follow your instructions tomorrow and see what gives and will keep you informed.  I have lost a little in the years and not as sharp as I used to be but LOVE the B.  Thanks for the help Bob

Well I feel like a dummy for I found the problem, I swapped this engine out for my family threw a rod through the original engine and I have had this one for a long time and today I decided to do a compression test and 0 compression cyl 2 and the other three was around 60.  I adjusted the valves so I am going back in to the top end tomorrow and will keep you posted. YEP ... ZERO Compression could be a problem with POWER !!  Wink

hope its just valve adjustment ! .... if it has been setting a while, maybe pour a few spoonfuls of auto trans fluid in the plug hole and let it set overnight ...rings might be STUCK ??

That is my plan for today for the engine has been sitting for so long for I   might look thru my stock pile for another and I have new sleeves and pistons also.  Will keep you informed. Bob

Bob... after soaking the rings / liners..... you might have some luck by starting the tractor and dragging a plow/ disc around for an hour under some load.. Warm it up good... Sometimes that will loosen up stuck rings..

Pulled the head and it had a sucked valve so I went to my stock pile and replaced the head and it now sounds like a B.  Thanks for all your help but feeling dumc for not doing a compression test earlier and would have saved me a lot of work. Bob
