We pulled a D17 series IV out of the weeds a year ago for restoration. It had sat quite some time outside. When we got it the lift arms were stuck in the up position. They would not relax. Ended up taking one of the pistons off and unfreezing it and now both will work freely by hand. However, as we have put tractor back together, the hydraulics do not work at all. The 3 pt doesn't move, and the remote outlet has nothing. It appears the valve block has no fluid going through it. We changed the oil and filter, old oil was milky. But nothing works. Previous owner led us to believe that things worked when parked, and he's not the type to mislead. 

Do lines need to be bled? Linkage adjustment? Internal filter somewhere? Any ideas?

Sounds like you need to add 3 gallons of oil. Where are you adding hydraulic oil ??

WHICH DIPSTICK ?????????? There are TWO !!!   The hydraulic is to the LEFT of the gearshift and screws in several turns.

Dump a couple gallons in the LEFT dipstick and keep rechecking it. You must be 3 or more gallons low on hydraulic oil.

Before I added oil, I would pull suction tube at bottom, turn tube up and fill pump with heavy oil, like 80 weight.                          MACK

Lift arms staying in the up position is usually the result of stuck linkages under the console.  Not uncommon.  All pivot points need to be freed up.  In some cases, the valve may be sticking, but my experience has shown the linkage to be the problem.

Finally got back to the barn to focus on this tonight. 

The oil was low, very low. Added a couple gallons, pumped it through, added more multiple times. Looks like it has stabilized now with oil staying near the full line on the dipstick.

The remote outlets are now working. Pushes a cylinder in and out. The lift arms still do not move. I think it may be linkage at this point. The service manual talks about the power boost linkage and backing out the nut until the arms go up. Didn't get that far tonight, will try that tomorrow unless you have another suggestion.

I am new to AC. Been 30 years since I've been on one, and that was only a couple times. I can't recall all the ins and outs of them. I'm more used to other colors now, so I really appreciate the help.

Yes, did that, arms don't raise.

Should back levers be in a particular spot. I know on some of our other tractors the lift arms won't raise or fall if the draft control is set a certain way.

LEAVE REAR LEVERS ALONE !! You say your remotes now work? The lift arms have to work too, as they are on the SAME circuit. So move the tall front outside lever forward instead. Maybe some clown has the linkage hooked up wrong.

Tried this again. 

The remotes work (there's only a single set on this tractor). Leaving the back levers alone, and pulling the outside front all the way back, nothing happens. Pushing it forward, nothing happens.

If I manually pick up the lift arms, when they go back down I am getting oil out of the breather on one of them. 

The oil level right now reads full on the lower full line. I was going to add some more oil so it is full to the upper full line, but seems like it won't make a difference if the remote works.

The tall front outside lever (with engine OFF) when pulled rearward should lock (detent) in that fully rear position. Does it ?? When you move that same lever in any direction (engine running) does the engine ever labor or sound like it is working ?? I'm telling you, both the remote valve and hitch valve are directly connected and whatever oil goes thru the remote then goes to the lift valve. I'm at a loss here as to what someone has done.

It will stay back with engine off. It makes no difference what position it is in with engine running, there's no laboring. It will stay back with engine running as well.

I checked the linkage and it is depressing the valve body as I would expect it should. 

Can you explain what the rear levers are for? The traction booster I would expect is the same as draft control on other tractors. The inner one, the position lever, only moves about 1/3 of the way back the half moon and then it stops, the valve seems fully depressed at that point. That seems odd to me.

Thought I would let folks know that I figured this out.

On the back of the valve block, directly under the spool for the lift arms, there is an adjusting screw. This was backed out very far. As I turned it in, the lift arms came up. They stayed up until I backed the screw out a bit, then they would go down. Probably still need to dial this into the perfect setting so they go up and down on their own, but they are working.

A "tee" handle adjusting screw ????    That is supposed to be screwed clear in T-I-G-H-T !!   Then, operate the front/outside/tall lever for up/down/hold.  Someone had stuck linkage problems in the past and solved their problem by loosening it up. WRONG !!!
