 Topic: 7040 radiator leak

Should I use a stop leak or just keep adding until discbine season is over? In 5 hours it will leak a quart. I’ve certainly used it before in the 301s to get through a season. I’m just wondering if it will hurt anything thank you all. Prolly 20 more hours of mowing this season. Dana

Run with the radiator cap loose and see if the leak slows down.

Same thing happened on my 200 and I used "Bars leak" and pretty much stopped the leak so I could finish feeding cattle for the winter. Removed radiator for repair and decided to replace the 3 short hoses on the side of engine for the oil cooler while apart. Every single passage in the oil cooler was 100% blocked/clogged with that crap. Will never ever use any "stop leak" again.

The engine oil cooler on the 200 is the honeycomb style (small diameter long tubes) as are the eng oil cooler and intercooler cores on 7000 series. Stop leak is just a bad idea, as things may seem just fine, but small passages get plugged reducing the effectiveness of any cooler core.

Stopleak and all that stuff is no good. The only product that I have seen that works is a product called irontite. It works and will not clog anything up. I have used it myself and we also used it in the diesel shop(Int'l dealership) that I worked in for years sold and used it.

I have used a stop leak product called Dike by Conklin. It has worked well for me and never had any issues from putting that in the system. My local NAPA store carries it. Not supposed to plug up anything.

Run the tractor with the cap loose until your field work is done. Then take the rad off and get it fixed. Recommend getting it boiled out as well.

Air? I don’t know, obviously there’s a limit to the size it will block, and a limit on the small side of passages in a system where it then shouldn’t be used. Few years back I had a recore done on my 7045, my rad was junk. After ~4 or 5 months I had a leak somewhere. Probably a solder joint but it was harvest season and I was limited in time and limited in funds not to mention more than a little ticked that after all the time and effort and money I put into a recore that it was leaking! I put Bars Leaks in it as at least a stop gap. Well, the leak went away, never came back, tractor runs cool and so does the oil. Heard from a very reliable knowledgeable source that every car made gets Bars Leaks put in at the factory. At least at one time. Interesting topic. As usual people’s opinions vary!

That is a very slow leak, I definitely wouldnt compromise the oil cooler chasing that small of a leak. cap loose, top off twice a day, sounds fine to me.
