I've got a couple questions.

1. Did early series D17s come with black faced guages?

2. Did AC print a manual with a Series II D17 on the cover? It seems like they would have but I haven't seen one on Ebay or at a show and I have all the reprints AGCO sells.

Dave, I don't know about the guages but in reference to the manuals I do not believe there was one specifically for the seriesII. I just looked through a 4 ft stack of different AC manuals I have collected over the years and I find one for the SeriesIII and another I found for the D17 just says....... Operating instructions and part illustrations model D17 tractor serial no. 24001 and up. hope that helps.    Dennis.

I'm thumbing through this early D17 manual and it looks like maybe the only guage that may have been black is the temperature guage but I'm looking at black and white pictures. It looks like the ammeter guage, traction booster guage and oil were white. But don't hold me to that Dave that's just the way it looks in the pictures of this manual.  Dennis.

There were no black face gauges on any D17s.  I think only the Series IV manual was different too.

There was one specifically for the Series III showing Serial no 42001 and up. My guess would be that there was one specific to the series IV as well due to the different hydraulic set up between the III and IV.

There were white faces on the 57s as best I remember.

Here is an original D17 series I (gas) manual cover. It only is for gas tractors I have a similar one that came with our early diesel D17 that only covered diesel tractors

About the time DA was going down the tubes I decided to order new manual for each series D17 and the WC, WD and WD45.

I have a company reprint of the above manual that is the same except for on the right side says prior to serial No. 24001 and they left out the parts section in the back.

This is the cover of the bar grill series I manual. The main change is the tractor on the front, the books are close to identical inside.
Both books have 2 pictures like this with a black water temp guage but other pictures show a white face guage.
I could not order a reprint for the series II and I've never seen a used one
Here is the cover of a factory reprint series III manual. Sorry about the DA logo
Quite a bit of changes from previous manuals, all new pictures, includes diesel & LP in the same manual. No parts section.

Here is the cover of a new series IV manual (identical to the one that came with our series IV ). Very similar to the series III manual other than documenting changes from the series III
I've seen a few early D17 with black face guages but I always assumed they were replacements. Sometime prototypes are used to shoot pictures for manuals and advertising.
Does anyone have a definative serial number break for the seris II?

My D-17 Manual - Serial No. 24001 and Up Has a little notation "D-17 GAS 2 OPER"
in the lower RH corner. I don't believe the 2 refers to series II, as, from what I understand, Series II began with Ser. #32001.
