I had my D10's starter rebuilt and when it goes in the holes will not align up, the hole on the starter is about 1/2" too low even after twisting it all of the way. Is it possible the starter is not clocked right? It looks like the housing is one solid unit. and nose will only go in one way.

The shop replaced the starter housing with a 371-12175, I wonder if they used the wrong housing? I am going to call them tomorrow.

sounds to me like you got the wrong housing. make sure they still have the old one for comparison. hopefully they can just machine a new hole.

I think you are correct. The starter must have been changed sometime in the past and a D14/D15 starter 1107758 was installed. The shop used the correct housing for the starter however not the application. From what I have looked up the D10 uses a 1879156 housing.

IF your talking about the hole that the set screw ( ground) screws into, yes, i have seen that and i have drilled a new hole an inch from the original so the new nose piece will fit... Location is not super critical, but needs to be close to original.

Set the starter where you want it... and put a PUNCH thru the hole and punch a point into the nose... remove the starter and drill a similar hole to the original size / shape.

It's possible the shop might have changed the front nose cone due to a crack found in the original nose cone after tanking or glass beading. I've come across this many times in my rebuilds for customer's over the years. On some applications, there isn't a replacement nose cone. so sometimes you have to improvise and relocate a new hole on the pinch bolt mount style older Delco's.  I've come across this once in a while on wet clutch forklifts too.
The D10/12's had two Starter motors. The 6V was your 1107474, and the 12V version was 1107265 for that particular application. Although, some chassis' could be interchanged, nose cones were different...

I took the starter back to the shop, they still had the original nose housing. I gave them the AC part number for the D10 cone, not available thru their supplier. They are going to machine a new mounting hole for the bolt. 

Alamance Starter and Alternator in Burlington, NC are super nice people. The guy who rebuilt the starter is in his early 20's I am so glad to see a young person taking on the trade.
