Dads getting to that age where hearing is becoming tougher. He's also still with the mind set that he does not need hearing aids.

So the other day a customer brought dad some heading assistance device from Cabela's. It's supposed to cancel the bad noise and amplify the good noise. Well he really likes those so he'd be willing to try something a bit better.

So my question is do you guys have a hearing aid that you really like that was in the 200 dollar ish range. I understand and so does he that he's not getting the top of the line product.

He's looking for noise enhancement mainly and something rechargable.

Bob... i have never used one so can not give recommendations.. I GOOGLE and you can find several brands for $70. - 300.  .... most say rechargable and mostly they are just an amplifier of speech.. some say they knock down the background noise...

Seems like you have two designs, in ear, and external saddle type...

I really dont understand why a small hearing aid has to cost $5-8000.   You can buy a decent used vehicle for that.. Lots of PROFIT somewhere..

Make sure they are true hearing aids.  Alot, if not most cheap ones are nothing more than amplifiers.  In the end, they will make your hearing worse.  Good ones are not cheap, my wife's a few years back was 3k, I'm told mine run ~6k but the goberment always over-pays for everything.  Mines VA issued.

Mine were $3500 and reasonably higher end but are many more really expensive. $200 will not gain you much value.

You can buy good hearing aids cheap, but it's the programming that costs, and without the programming, they're just amplifiers.  Mine were little over 5K but with insurance they were around 3K +/-.  Once they found the range I lost, they fine tuned by saying different words.  It's amazing what she said as opposed to what I heard without them.  Of course, they know what words sound different and at what range.  Well worth what I paid, hearing still isn't perfect but that gives me a little pass when the wife says, "I told you last week . . . ."

Mine are same way, amplify ONLY those frequencies I was losing in a hearing test booth.  Computer adjustments and I hear damned well in most conditions, tend to cut them off in load stores or restaurants as just too much noise from all directions.

It should not be that difficult.. Human "speech" is confined to a limited frequency..... Bird chirping or other is different...

The voiced speech of a typical adult male will have a fundamental frequency from 85 to 155 Hz, and that of a typical adult female from 165 to 255 Hz.

Bob,
I'll give you my experience. The problem with the low-end units is they are merely amplifiers. The trouble with our ears is they no not generally degrade linearly. The first step is to have the ears checked by a specialist across the whole human hearing band with. I did not do that for my first set of hearing aids, bought a pair for $750, they actually made matters worse! because they were linear amplifiers they not only raised the level of sound where I could not hear, but, also where I could hear. Did you ever hear a speaker that was over driven? It gets all fuzzy. The higher end units can be programed to 'fill in the gaps', so to speak, raise the sound where the testing has identified weaknesses. Of course, there are limits to this. In my case, I am completely deaf at certain frequencies, so all the amplification in the world won't help. And this brings up a second point. The way we identify sounds is by our brain processing all the frequencies from 20-to about 15000ish hertz, along with their amplitude. If we are missing some of those frequencies, the brain may struggle to identify a sound. This becomes real apparent with the spoken word. Even with hearing assist, I still struggle to comprehend the spoken word at times.
So, anyway, I took by $750 dollar unit back within a few days, got tested, and bought a set of Hi-end ones. It is not what God gave me, and never will be, but a tremendous help. My advice, get dad to get tested, then find a way to get what he needs, his quality of life will go up a lot. Most places now offer payment plans. My current set cost $4200. These can be adjusted to suit conditions. For instance, noisy environments can be challenging for those with hearing aids. So, if i am conversing with, my bride, in a noisy eatery, I can adjust to tune out, actually, not completely, surrounding noise, and just hear what is right in front of me. For my two cents, from my experience, I wouldn't bother with anything on the low end, or get anything until dad is tested.
I am still confident of this;
I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.

Yeah, amplifiers are cheap, hearing aids not so much.  You're paying for the technology and knowledge!  It's expensive, but it's worth it.  Eyeglasses are in the same racket, but you want to see, you want to hear. . . .

I'm not speaking from personal experience (yet), but watching my mother go through this.  It has been studied that hearing loss contributes to loss of mental capacity and dementia.  You lose that input and interaction and the brain begins to go dormant.  I BELIEVE this.  The other sad thing, you ever notice how MAD people get at someone when they don't hear you?  It's a weird frustrating part of human nature.  If a person breaks their ankle and limps, you feel some sympathy, help them, etc.  If a person says "huh?", the look of scorn and anger comes over faces and after a big SIGH of frustration they angrily YELL the same thing.  Then make fun of the person behind their back.

So yeah, good luck in getting your dad some help.

I will add to what Lou said... ...Just took my expensive aids in cause one of the buttons was not working... no questions asked- cept is it still under warranty, and it is/was,,, ,,, i will get them back in a week and going again.. also batteries provided for life, and those other little tiny pieces that keep the ear wax from plugging the workings of the aid.   and yes I am lucky enough to have the researves, because i saved, so I could 'afford' them.
just giving another point of view

Well my son has some ear muffs for shooting, noise cancellation, but you can hear someone talking 75 yards away. Nice hunting because you can hear everything you wouldn't normally.

I have those Power Muffs as well. Love em for gun range and and bowhunting. Not good for TV or general use in my case. Remember once when a show it made the furnace quite loud and when the cat came in the room it was MEEOOWWWINGG!! Never used them again for that

Thank you guys for all your suggestions and thoughts.

We will first start of with he's not financially hard up. He is extremely thrifty and will squeeze the Dickens out of a penny before he decides it's been squeezed enough.

Second, to get him to go to the doctor takes an act of Congress. Come to think of it I don't think Congress could even get him there. He just won't go. He's like a stubborn mule the more you try the harder he plants his feet in opposition.

Third he did spring for some amplifiers. He said they help a lot.

Someone mentioned how the person talking gets angry when the deaf person says huh? I have noticed that between me and him. I feel horrible about it because then I have to yell back to him and I don't care for that
