A guy traded in a Deere branded square baler last week for a new New Holland unit. The old baler has good knives, the knotter works, and the unit has a central point greasing system installed that works well. It was being used on first cutting this year without issues. However the former owner purchased a new hydraulic accumulator and baler together so this one is available to me but I know nothing about them, or even what to look at, or for? It has always been kept inside since new and still looks good. Nothing is missing, or damaged I can tell. The mechanics tell me it's about as good as you'll find in a used baler.
Any ideas what I should look to give for this? I can't get any pricing as the owners are on vacation till the end of next week. Thanks,

More details? Model 336, 348? Bale thrower other options? Could be any where from a $2000 to $10,000.

I can run by work and snap photos later this morning. It still has the original but faded paint. A large heavy flywheel too.

Tractor House, search for the model of the baler. Prices listed will be high (they are asking prices, not selling prices), but will get you in the ball park.

Hope they make better balers than they did in the 70’s. So glad dad sold it and bought a NH 273 Hayliner. Still works great to this day. Very rare it ever misses a knot.

I going to guess with a accumulator behind it a 336 or 348 baler. If it as nice as you describe I would buy it. But first you need to get a price from the seller. Shed kept, good paint, and if the baler tight, I would think it be a good buy at $10,000 for both. Equipment is crazy high now and it might bring more than that at a farm sellout auction. Pictures and what the seller wants would be helpful.

Here are some photos I snapped this morning:
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() There is no accumulator with this baler. It was sold separately to an employee who also raises hay for his cattle feed. I really don't know much about this baler and have never seen it work; just told it is in good condition for the age and wasn't giving problems in use.

My neighbors had one when I was growing up. I was riding on the fender of the IH 856 when it left the tractor and went backward down the hill. It had a hydraulic kicker and pulling the wagon up and down the hills really work the pivot points where the pole hooked to the baler. If it only had pulled an accumulator that shouldn't be an issue but check it out. They're a lite baler but if you go slow with smaller windrows it can make a good bale.

If it's in as good as shape as they say I'd say 2500-3000 in my opinion

Do yourself a favor and find a new holland or allis if you need one. Deeres just cant keep up with one in the field

Thanks for the input to all so far. The baler does not have anything loose, or worn out I'm told by the mechanics. I don't know about any "kicker" other than what I think are little spears, (for lack of a better term) that seem to push a bale to the discharge chute once tied. Again I've never seen one of these work so just thinking aloud.
Once the land is cleared there will be between 9 and 11 acres planted in hay. The balance will be for a house and maybe a moderate hobby shop with storage. Since this endeavor will not be for any kind of "cash crop", or profitability, speed is not a concern but who knows down the road so all opinions are listened to. I did notice a New Holland baler down on the used machinery lot this morning about the same physical size. I know nothing about this piece but am going to ask. I'll grab photos tomorrow when in the area. Thanks again,

Those aren't fast but they're pretty solid. There is aftermarket support for parts NLA from Deere or needing upgraded.
But no accumulator, kicker or chutes I'm gonna say $800.00.

Hi and thanks. I believe there are two chutes not shown. I could be one chute that folds over on itself as it is separate. The accumulator was pulled from attachment points just under the discharge chute, and from the hub area of the axle on the other side. The accumulator had an extension that was slightly under the discharge chute and the bales were pushed onto the accumulator tray.

2 chutes would be attached to the back of the chamber so someone can stack the hay on a wagon pulled behind the baler.

Doesn't even have the half chute to drop the bales on edge. That stuff's a pain to buy if its's not with the baler.

I think the chute is included but if missing, and unless something special, I can make one with my 72" finger break.

2 things I see, it has a screw augur feed and old style pickup fingers. You should wait for a NH, with a better packing system and a supersweep pickup...

2x on waiting for a super sweep. The tines are too widely spaced on many balers of this vintage.

That is probably a 24t. Made a very long time ago. A nice baler but I agree with everyone else. For what you need to make that baler what you want, you should probably pass. It is the end of hating season. Be patient, a lot more modern baler will show for about that money.

From the photos I saw that a 224T baler, supposed to be next size above the John Deere 24T square baler. I got a John Deere 24T I brought used in 1983 for $700. Mine be a good baler and I baled a lot of square bales with it over the years. I agree it will not bale as fast as the newer higher capacity square balers that was built years later, but f you are not going to be baling 10,000 bales or more a year it will do what you want to do. My John Deere 24T square baler will drop more hay on the ground in couple hours than I can find help to get it up with. If my windrows are uniform I can put out a fairly uniform bale. I saw a John Deere 24T baler sell at an estate auction last year that was sharp and had a wagon hitch and chute bring $2200.

Going by the paint wear its had a lot of hay put through it. Bearings and other parts most likely have a lot of wear on them and may need to be replaced. If I was you and really wanted it, I would have to see it in operation spitting out some bales. Like a used car, take it for a test drive. But, I would pass and get a NH baler. We’ve been running the same NH baler for Over 40 years and it has been virtually trouble free.

I agree on waiting for a New Holland. They were king around here as far as square balers, and for good reason.

If it has any life left in it that 224 should still be able to bale some hay. We have had a 336 on the farm since the mid 80s and I wouldn't hesitate to bale a 1000 bales with it anytime. My dad's cousin had a NH 310 that he bought brand new in the early 80s and we were going to work together with him baling, that thing was a lemon and the reason we have a Deere baler.

Well there ya' have it. It's worth between $800 and $10,000, and is either a pile of crap or will work just fine.

We've had a 14T on the farm bought new on the farm. I would say it's baled 200,000 bales or more. Used to bale all the hay for a 60 head dairy farm. They'd bale 1,000+ bales a day with it. It doesn't bale as fast as newer balers but it baled as fast as I could stack the wagon. It never gave much trouble and we still use it today sometimes. Deere used the same knotters though the 90's or 2000's I believe.
You'll need a chute to go up to the wagon and look it over good for wear. It may be a great baler but could just just plum wore out. This is an Allis site, you know there will be Deere haters here

I expected a wide variance of opinions to value and am grateful to those whom contributed. Having no experience myself I now have some things to look at and discuss with those local that want to help.
Some like green, some like orange, some like blue, and some like red equipment which all do the same thing. Value to me is what someone is willing to pay and very subjective. An informed decision is always best in these instances. Having no experience myself, I solicit input from those that do. I'll get this thing looked over good in the next couple of days as it won't go anyplace till I say "yay, or nay", as they know I'm wanting a used baler. Thanks kindly,

Good baler in its day. That pickup is not designed for todays hay operations. Back in the day, hay was cut no earlier than 1/4 bloom, with a sickle mower & crimper. Just about as tall as alfalfa would get before lodging. Hitched behind a 30-50 hp tractor, and a flat rack behind, moving across the field at about walking speed.
For a beef or horse operation, where feed quality is not as critical, if in good shape, I’d go for it. Operation within its limits is key. Edited by Lars(wi) - 29 Aug 2022 at 2:33pm |

I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.
