DJS has a tool for pulling the brake pins on a WD45. It looks like a block with a U shape milled in to fit the slot in the brake pin,and two threaded holes with bolts that when turned will pull out the brake pins. Has anyone tried this tool,and does it work...or just rip the rim off the brake pin ?? Thank for any info or advice. My late dad bought this tractor in 1955, and I dont recall these pins ever being out.

normally takes heat and penetrant and a lot of beating... On some tractors ( not WD) you can get to the BACK side, an impact hammer works good.
tool will probably pull the head off the pin if it has never been out..

I've got one and have tried it on one of my WD's. The left side pin moved with using the tool, but took quite a bit of pressure. The right side wouldn't move and I didn't want to pull the head off the pin so I have been soaking it with Kroil on a regular basis and will try it again next week. If it won't let go, I'll get out the flame wrench!! I've already got the new linings and pins. I've got another WD and a WD45 to do after that.

I have a home-made version of this, they are very good about pulling the heads off the pins. My success rate is probably around 30%. I've cut some out with a torch, this sucks! I think the last one I did was the D-17, basically the same as a WD. I drilled and tapped the pins and pulled them that way. Think I tapped them 1/2-20.

Thanks for the input guys. I don't really want to get into a real mess, but on the other hand I don't like driving a tractor with marginal brakes...I wish there was a shop around here that would tackle the project!! I am 75, and crawling around under tractors is as much fun as it was 40 years ago !

Yes these can be a pain. I got one out on mine and cut one. Have you tried driving it in a bit say 1/16 or 1/8 inch so as to not lose the head then pull it out. Give it a couple heat cycles and then do it but let it cool completely. Heat up one evening then play with it in the morning! Good luck.

I have done three brake jobs for other people and charged $400 labor. I have a pin puller made by Gary Agramson but found quickest way is to tourch them 1/2 inch at a time and drive pin in to cut more. When you do it this way you must be careful not to cut brake shoe ears.
