A friend of mine picked this buggy up cheap due to a family death. He drove it home from Ohio on the "turn-pike-toll road" and couldn't hit 65, and the tach was at 2900

that engine speed would be about right for a 4.10 rear end... The motor is 140 cubic inches or about the size of a Allis D10 tractor engine...... he aint going to win any drag races..... That little engine needs a 4.10 just to get up to speed... Still think it should run 75 mph and 3500- 4000 rpm...... but i would not push it over 60 mph.

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits. If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY |

Would be a oddball Auto on such a Low rear ratio, usually were closer to 3 or 2.5 unless OD or at least lock up converter.

First I would recommend getting it to Ford mechanic and get the accuracy of the gauges checked, and check for proper transmission function. The transmission more that likely needs a pm service anyway. If those have the same transmission as the Taurus, every 30,000 miles do a transmission fluid and filter change. |

I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

If you can't hit 65, and your tach won't take it past 2900 with 4:10's and ~28" tires Most common was a 215/75-R15... that's 27" or 776 rotations per mile... at 60mph, that's 776 tire rotations per minute. 2900/4.1 = 707rpm... so you're in the ballpark +/- tire size variation (larger tire=larger diameter = lower rpm) double check your instrument panel's indicated road speed against GPS. IF you're running the 215/70-R15 (that's 27" diam and 776 rotations per mile) you'd have a driveshaft speed of 3181rpm. The transmission would be in an overdrive ratio to be at 2900, but I wouldn't be surprised if the automatic WAS an overdrive. Stock axle for that is the Ford 7.5", and it was available in open and limited slip (Auburn gear!) variants, 4:10 WAS a common ratio. Aside from wind drag or some other serious parasitic load, you SHOULD be able to get her to break 80 without too much difficulty, but the coefficient of drag, particularly with an open bed, will likely cause the rear end to become aeronautic feature rather than automotive... and when that happens, pickup trucks tend to hit a 'brick wall' for ground speed. I believe your engine is called the 2.3 'Duratec'... if so, it's a dual overhead cam, driven by timing chain. Generally, the chain will have an indefinite service life, but SOME of those engines had a variable valve timing system. I don't know exactly how they did it on this one (it's mostly a Mazda design IIRC), but if it has VVT, and that feature is somehow inoperative, then you'll find it's powerband is restricted at one end or the other.

Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest.
