And this is the varmint section, so, perfect question.
My house is located in a wooded area, plenty of trees and a small creek out back. Squirrels (I assume, could be chipmunks, gophers.....) have gotten under the hood of two of my cars and chewed and shredded the insulation on the hood.
Any suggestions on repelling these destructive little a-holes from doing this damage?

I have a .177 air rifle works great. My cousin had thousands of dollars damage to his truck from squirrels. New wiring covering is vegetable based and not oil based.

Mice maybe?? If the vehicle is in the garage leave the hood up and a light on, they hate light, I heard this years ago from of course a farmer, I leave the hoods up on everything in there and have never had problems. Neighbor thinks I'm pulling his leg and he has had to find chewed wires. I'm thinking it works for mice, chipmunks I don't know about.

Cats
I have plenty of barn cats and don't have any problems with critters getting into where they shouldn't be. most things neve come further than the tree line. The one that do don't survive to go back.

Wasp and hornet spray. At least two cans. Soak engine compartment with one, underneath vehicle with the other. Will need to redo every year and a half to two years. If you forget, they will remind you.

Im with LESS........ Moth balls work on mice... I was thinking tape a few round the inside of hood area.... I was also thinking some SPRAY that would soak into the insulation and dry on the wires would be good.... Wasp spray sounds like a winner !

Wasp spray sounds like an interesting idea. I was thinking if peppermint oil or any of that kind of crap worked......We might just give that wasp spray a try. Thought about mothballs, cab fresh, etc., but a good way to make it stay put.

I fix a lot of rat damage, wiring mostly. After I am done with the repair I spray PB Blaster all over. I stinks and stays stinking for awhile. Done it to my own and haven't had any more issues

Make sure you examine the cabin air filters, under the glove box, on most cars. Fivel and 2 holes often nest there!

Just this early spring, dad had his truck into the Ford dealership for a "non -working" blower motor  . 2 weeks later and the entire console removed, the rodent damage was repaired  . The tech said he's never seen so much carnage in a dash area

Sounds like red squirrels to me. They are less than 1/2 the size of a regular gray squirrel and they chew every fricking thing they see. They love wires for sure. The only way I know to rid them is to shoot them as far as I know. They get shot here as soon as they are noticed.

Killed Red Squirrels at my Father in laws years ago with Tom Cat cubed rat bait. You can leave it out in the weather. The Squirrels were chewing holes in his barn and hauled nuts into the door track so he couldn't open the doors.

I'm with PaulB... Sage is a very territorial huntress, she kills everything that comes across the property line that isn't human.
My neighbor up the road trapped three brown tree squirrels living in his spruce windbreak... they were chewing on his front porch (?!!?) Strange, but they're rodents, if they don't chew, their teeth will overgrow, and they'll die...

We had the same problem at the office parking lot. After they chewed the wiring on my car and another, we started using live traps with sunflower seeds for bait. DNR office with the public, so we couldn't use real traps, shoot or chemical. Got rid of 45 chipmunks in a couple months and the damage stopped. I still have a bunch of acorns rolling around in the hood of my truck that won't come out of there.

Well, I sure am not against the idea of shooting them, but like I say, it just ain't never going to happen......UNLESS, I live trap them and shoot them in there. That just might be the ticket. Will try the wasp spray too. Little leery of rat bait, just because I don't want the pets to get into it.
Wife's got dang bird feeders out. Seriously, have you ever seen a starved bird? Not helping with the number of squirrels (and yes, the little red SOB's). I was thinking no bird feeders last year when the first car got chewed.....but I think that's wrong, I think there's just more feeders this year.
Thankfully, haven't had any wiring damage that I know of. Yet. Just the insulation.

As just a side note. I had mice build a nest in the clutch of a Ford Ranger I had. On a chance I turned it into my insurance company under comp. They payed for a new clutch. Maybe I just got lucky.

Both son and I have suffered wire damage in our trucks from something chewing on them. I recently discovered a ground hog sitting on top of the engine of my truck. Ten, last week, we found a nest in the well casing, and the little scumbags chewed the wires through halfway down the well.....then they met their maker! apparently the ground had settled at the well, and pulled the conduit from the cap, allowing just enough space for the criminals to squeeze past.

Good cats and dogs can help keep little critters away, but can create problems as well.
Had pair of dogs get a squirrel corner in the engine compartment of a 1960 Chey grain truck.They jurked plug wires so hard they broke a spark plug. Would of been much worse on a newer vehicles. But then not so much room for a dog to get up so far into the engine compartment.

Lou, my dad had a pickup that wouldn't start. He had it towed to garage and found the wires going to the tank/fuel pump had been chewed. He had seen more than once a darn groundhog climbing around on/under the truck, so that was the offender. Groundhog was smart and always sat next to something so you could never get a shot at him.

I used moth balls or Grandpa Gus's Cinna-mint scented mouse repellent Pouches under the hood of our vehicles cause I can't keep the mice out of our garage.
