Could someone tell me if a D17 series 4 engine can be used in a D17 series 1 tractor?

Your choke linkage will be different or use your old carburetor. Your power steering pump would have to be grafted onto the newer engine, if you have power steering. Must use your old or reman clutch and pressure plate.

When you say power steering pump would have to be grafted onto the newer engine
do you mean that i would just move the pump from the old engine to the new engine?

Old power steering pump has to be removed from the old engine, mounted and gear lash set on the new engine.

Would all the parts from the old engine fit the new engine .I found a series 4 short block
i can buy that's been rebuilt.  parts from the old engine like head,oil pan ,oil pump ,etc.

the engine i have has crankshaft number 229022 . Do you know if the series 4 would have
the same crankshaft .

A series 4 will be a different p/n but it directly interchanges.
