Hey guys, I've got an older Dempster water pump that I'd like to get functioning again. It's not a small pitcher pump, but a larger pump with the cylinder down in the well. I'm looking for a cylinder to use with this pump. I've seen a few smaller Dempster cylinders over the years that are something like a 3"x12" stroke. Does anyone here have anything like that they'd want to part with, or know where I might look to find one? Ebay hasn't been much help lately. I've also seen larger ones that are something like a 20" stroke, but considering the pump handle stroke is only something like 6", that doesn't sound like what I need. Thanks!

Lehman’s Hardware has them, 3” X 10” brass, but for the price, geeesh, you could buy a submersible pump and put in it. https://www.lehmans.com/product/brass-water-well-cylinder/

Our local hardware store had a few leathers in stock to rebuild the old cylinders. But the store has been there 100 years this year. I have no idea how long they have been on the shelf or what size they are. Do you have any Amish close by you. They may know of someone in your area that has them.

Yikes, that new one is pretty expensive! I mainly want this for a functioning collector item, being as it was my great-grandpa’s.
If I had a cylinder, I would look into getting new leathers. Unfortunately, I don’t believe there are any Amish in our area. At least, I have never heard of any in western Oklahoma.

If your only using it for nostalgia put the small cylinder in.  Just have to pump faster.

Cresting I’m looking at doing the same thing but making the pump section out of pvc and inner tube pieces. Should work for the 4ft lift I have.

At one time I had thought about taking a piece of 2” pvc and putting in the guts from a pitcher pump to make a simple pump cylinder. I may go ahead and try it. Wouldn’t cost much at least

all air cylinders I use are SS.. well casings are steel...

Do you have any Windmiller's around your area? I bought cylinders and parts from Muller windmills in Yankton SD. How high are you lifting the water ?

Surely there are some abandoned windmills around the country where your at, that the farmer would let you take the cylinder out of the hole. It doesn't need to be a dempster, around here aermotor is the most common but the cylinder won't matter what head you have. How much stroke does your hand pump have, might not need a 12 inch stroke cylinder, 12 inch would be more common on a windmill, although would work fine on a hand pump, just not needed.

The hand pump has about a 6” stroke. I’m not sure what the windmill stroke is right off hand.
There are quite a few old windmills around, I need to check some more maybe. I’ve looked at two and both have the cylinders removed already.

There is a guy on craigslist in Mustang that sells Windmills & parts. I bet he has cylinders.

windmill usually has 10 inch stroke if you want it to work just buy a new brass one I have been playing withwindmills for years and just put 2 up in the last month and decided to put wells under them and put standards in and old pump cyls but I broke almost all my cyls trying to take them apart made me sick but it is what it is I have 3 left but decided not to brake them yet I found brass cyls for 200 bucks they were a 2 inch with a 12in stroke I believe windmill cyl usually a 3x10
