 Topic: brush hog parts

I have a chance to buy an Allis Chalmers brush hog (5 ft) with a snap coupler. According to the seller, the only thing missing is part of the PTO. Now the question I have for you historians is when was the last snap coupler brush hog made. Also how hard is it to get parts, i.e. blade, gear box etc. If these parts are available I will possibly purchase it. I can't look at it at this time as it is over a 3 hr drive. Any information you gentlemen could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Hard stuff to get is the rattle (over-running) clutch pins and body. Blades with a deep enough offset are pretty hard to find, too. That's been my experience with the one I have, which is LaPorte model. Happily, the drive line can be made up from parts off of an old all-crop combine, as they interchange, the U-joints, rattle clutch, bearings, maybe the gearbox too!
Be sure to know which style it is. LaPorte is common to the AC combines, not so sure about the earlier (Danuser) style. Last ones were built till 1975.
The easiest identifiable difference that can help you ID a Laporte built unit is the 2 ribs that extend the length of the unit, just outside where the 3 point or snap coupler attaches in front. Looks like someone laid a piece of c-channel iron, legs down, on the top of the deck... 
Post a picture, if you can, many can ID and advise the model, here.

Looks like someone took a torch to the center hitch member? Looks like a jagged cut to me if I’m seeing it correctly.

That sure as heck looks like a Bush-Hog maybe model 205 or 305, not AC! Bush hog sold a lot of their equipment with a kit that would fit an AC snap coupler. Look at the the rear of the unit, in your pictures, I think I see the Bush Hog logo, on the left rear side. I would get on google, and look at some pictures, try Allis-Chalmers LaPorte (or Danuser) bush hog images, as the search term. Or when you go look at it, see If you can find the model/serial # plate, should be on the cross member, just under the gear-box.
Don't get me wrong, here, nothing wrong with a Bush-hog mower, and the price seems reasonable. I would, however see if I could find the friction clutch, complete. This one appears to be a shear bolt model. Good news is that Bush Hog will still sell you parts, and there are lots of them out there, in junkyards, like Yingling's, in Gettysburg...
Or get a copy of Swinford's excellent book, Allis Chalmers Farm Equipment 1914-1985, if you can find one.

Its also possible that that's a Home-made SC! Look at the welds, positioning of the members, and bent pipe towards the rear end of the hitch, front view!

I never saw a AC brush cutter that looked like that. pTO different, reinforcement run wrong direction, gearbox different, and many other things. I would keep looking if I wanted a snapcouppler. MACK

After researching older models of brush hogs, zI think DIY DAVE is right. I think somebody took some hillbilly engineering to add a SC to an old Brush hog. Thanks again for all the info.

Definitely a bush hog mower with modified hitch. Ive got that exact mower. The gearbox and skid runners are a dead giveaway.

Best part of a Laporte built BH, IMHO is the "rooster comb" height adjuster in place of the toplink! If I spy one in a junkyard, it comes home with me!
