Are the serial #'s on the 190 thru 220 stamped in the left side bell/torque tube housing like the D17 or some place else? Are the later 200's better than earlier ones? What are some specific things to watch out or check for, besides jumping out of any gears? We never had any bigger AC's nor have any neighbors.

Yes, All on the torque tube housing but you may find the 200 numers on the right side.

This is just my opinions on a later model 200 ; Allis made a cost reduction model 200 and thses are the later ones , the transmissons seem to be worse on these , they are hard to get in gear, jump out easier, and just aggrivating; the POWERDIRECTOR shifting is worse, they used a -gate- type selector to keep it in high or low and hi side always seems to get out of adjustment and start slipping , AC had an update on this - I prefer the push down style ,they dont move once looked in ,  the front casting is 500 lbs lighter than old models or XT,S , which aint a big deal, but you sink a 5- 16,s in the front gets light !!!  They have the great 301 engine but the 200,s seem to be more prone the electrollies problems and need new sleeves ; these are just opinions but Ive seen a few come round and they are all the same ; find an older 200 or a good 190 xt, then you got a tractor

I have a 1974 model 200. I bought it in1976 with 600 hrs. on it. It has the gate style selector for the power director. When I got it the plate with the notches that hold it in high or low was wore out and it would not stay engaged. I replaced it with a new one and 34 years later it shows no wear at all. Makes me think they changed it much harder steel. The short lever and hand rail makes it so easy to shift. I have never driven one with the push-down shifter,but it looks like it would be harder to shift smoothly or feather it because you have to hold it down and shift at same time. I installed Year-a-Round cab with heat and air when I first got it and my love for this tractor is 2nd. only to my wife.

My dad and grandpa bought one new. It has the gate style selector on it. The old tach quite working at 4750 hours. We put a new on it and the hour meter quite working on it at 3750 hours about 15 years ago. Dad brazed up the corners of the locks years ago. The only thing every done to the tractor was to put a different head on it. ( grandpa never would let it cool off a little after plowing before he would shut her down). As for the shifting, if you idle it all the way down and wait 5 seconds it shifts fine. One of the best tractors we ever had!
