Wife came home angry yesterday, started firing off texts to me as I was off to Oklahoma, seems WM in Owensville MO and Warrenton MO are now Pressing use of the Self Checkouts, reduced the number of Checker lanes to four at Owensville and six at Warrenton then only had TWO open at either store with a clerk explaining to customers they NEEDED to use the Self Check stations. Ticks me off the wife HAS to shop at Wally Worlds anyway.
I swear will stop using these stores altogether now. IF has to happen will buy our assorted sundries we HAD purchased there online and have shipped to me rather than spend another nickel in these stores. They do not wish to have employees we can set them up for success.

Thats funny and is a joke

Seems to be the trend at the Wally Worlds around here too. Really gripes me that you usually have to wait in a long line to check out even when there are relatively few people in the store, like at 8:00 am. We have Aldi's grocery stores around here: German based. They don't have the variety of brands that other stores have but from what we have seen good quality and mostly less $ than WM. The checkers literally will process your cart full in a couple of minutes but do not bag. You bring your own bags or buy theirs and do it yourself. And you don't have to cover 5 acres to get through the grocery selection either. All good for us old farts.

I grab empty boxes in the store to put my groceries in at the checkout at Aldi. I find it the best place to shop for what I buy.

We have a couple of Aldi stores to. Like them pretty good. We also have an old IGA in Fairmount and that's where we usually go. It costs a little more and they don't have nearly as much as Walmart but you deal with people. You can even still talk to the butcher to get what you want. I know the self checkout thing started a while back but I have to wonder if the push to it now stems, at least in part, from the lack of people willing to do the job

IF I am the one to shop for the week to two weeks I shop local, two small grocers and a Sav-A-Lot here in town. SAL gives good bargains but have to watch as some are actually higher priced than the other shops, the market north of town has a Awesome Meat section and full time butcher shop, tends to buy locally grown beef/pork and lamb. Other grocer uses same discount supplier that supplies WM and other grocers with Best Brand sells at similar pricing and do NOT have to drive thirty minutes to get there.

I did refrigeration work for a popular hamburger chain, I was told years ago that they are capable of having a store with only 1 employee, cashless and all he does is load the machines with product, machines were capable of cooking, wrapping and delivering your self order. Government officials may mandate a certain wage but not how many you have to hire. I have to correct myself, In order to enter a "confined," space, it requires a minimum of 3 people, 1 to do the work, 1 to monitor the entire operation, and 1 to stand there, phone in hand to dial 911 in case of an emergency. That my friends was an OSHA question on my master mechanical test years ago, a topic for another time! Edited by JW in MO - 22 Aug 2021 at 11:14am |

They been doing it here (Wally world central) for quite some time. Our local store has lost many customers.
I can’t understand it??? A few years back they opened a lot of small gas n grocery stores in small towns all around North west Arkansas. Ran them six months to a year and shut them all down. Said it was an experiment. |

Next thing you know, gas stations will be wanting you to pump your own gas !!
![]() Wal Mart aint going nowhere . Too convenient for the masses. Can be 10- 20- 30% cheaper than small local stores and dont have the selection.. One stop shopping.. Get your groceries , pickup oil and filter for the car, get a gallon of paint to redo the garage, stop by the pharmacy to get your prescription, and have your eyes tested for new glasses...... Well, that took 2 hours !

Most checkout lanes at Wally World are the self checks now. I despise them, its not horrible if you have just a few things, but if have a cart full, its worse than spending time with your wife’s family.
Haven’t bought a can of paint from WM in over 25 years, around here they handle Glidden, and WM generic. WM’s are doing away with a lot of the sub sandwiches, and such. Guess the Subways in store didn’t like the competition. |

Maybe they have to go this route because they can't get anyone to work. They are all at home collecting their unemployment.

Once in HomeDepot when the first self checkout appeared, While the wife in I were standing patiently in line (we're adults and passed kindergarden) a young twinkie manager told us we could use the self checkout. I asked her if we got a discount for doing here job? We just got a look like you get doing card tricks for a dog. Although a lady waiting in another line got to laughing so hard she almost had to sit down.
Another time we were in WW very early one morning and had gotten a cartload. Not a checker in sight, just a couple of managers herding people to the self checkouts. I asked why couldn't one of them open a checkout lane and the answer it's too early for the checkers to start. I told here I could order everything online and have it delivered to the front door for the same price or maybe less. There we left the carload and walked out. Like most anything including buyers penalties at auctions. It's not forced on you, you've just rolled over and accepted it. Edited by PaulB - 22 Aug 2021 at 2:48pm |

WOW, my wife ran to Wally world today in Festus, same deal as everyone else is saying , she said two check out lanes going, couple of managers steering everyone else to the self checkout, she also said very very little left in there to buy.I told her she should have left that cart loaded and right where it was at, screw them, we'll spend our money at the local mom & pop grocery.

well at $15/hr+, it'd take less than a week to pay for a 'computer'. always shows up to work, no lunch breaks, no badmouthing, pennies a day for power,no union, no healthcare,no W2,doesn't text on the job,can work 24/7 !!!! What's not to like, from the company view ?? The 'selfserve gas' is a GREAT example of how 'tight' the profit margins are on some items

Walmart, Taco Bell etc. all going to self checkout, a generation or two and nobody will notice. My kids never experienced a full service gas station, you can thank Casey’s for that. They could sell their gas cheaper by not paying an attendant, worked so well they became a volume buyer.
Back in our day, the parents had the money and business catered to them, nowadays kids have lots of spendable cash and we’re just in the way for a little while. |

When the "assistants" come up to me and ask me to use self checkout, I always ask if there is a discount in price, for doing so. Now they leave me alone.

Yes, I left the cart right there and said it loud enough for everyone in the store to hear. "I'm going to a good store where they appreciate my business." Let it be known!! Don't just stop going there, yell it on the mountain. If I want to PAY to go shopping, I'll join a Sam's Club or COSTCO.

nuther great scam.... 'paperless' invoicing from 'providers'(cell, cable, hydro, etc.) They urge you to go 'paperless', so they don't have to print a bill, put inenvelope, add a stamp, mail it out....THAT makes them an extra $5 every month, every customer.....add a bit of 'overhead' and it's clsoe to $100 per year on every sucker, er , customer they con.... Meanwhile YOU have to use YOUR computer, internet access, printer, ink, etc. to print the invoice (needed for TAX purposes....),so it cost YOU money. I've been asked several time 'going paperless', I ask where on my bill will you show I get a $5 CREDIT ?... dead silence.....

There is a BP station in town that will pump your gas if you push the Handicap Button by the pump. I'm thinking I may be using that this winter.
