My central air conditioner quit last evening. The whole system, heat & air was new in Oct. '94. I'm thinking that maybe instead of just fixing the air I should replace the whole system, heat & air. It's an Ultra SX 80.

I would find out first, what the issue is. Summertime is not best time to replace an a/c. You will get bent over a barrel on price.

'quit'...... could mean a $15 capacitor packed it in, or a $20 relay('contactor'),maybe needs a wee bt of Freon or the fins cleaned ?? Get it checked out FIRSAT before you fork over $10K for a new system..... My HVAC was put in 1986, still 94+% eff, balls cold air too...... Was going to replace(it's dusty in here(gee, you're sanding wood in the basement...duh....), but it's still running...

It was a simple fix, capacitor, I should have seen that. It's not easy to see inside the area the relays and capacitors are, when it's turned towards the house. Something that I have not seen before, the repair tech, was a gail. Dusty

thats a good fix "for now"...long term it might be time to consider a new unit. Now you have to the time to do it on Your schedule !

At the farm outside unit is 1986, inside furnace is 1996. Had to get it filled last summer and this summer so there is a leak. Decided to go with dual fuel heat pump.. Will be changed as soon as it cools off in September. $6000.

LP/Electric? for the backup heat?? Neighbor has a LP backed HP that also has a Electric Coil if decide to turn that on instead of using Gas. Our ground source has Antifreeze in Ground loops(NO Wells) where we do have a emergency resistance coil, had to use that when the HP lost refrigerant due to a cracked coil while awaited that coil, doubled to almost tripled the electrical bill for those months. Awaiting a bid from a stove contractor on a wood burner add on supplement heat system.

my guess was a cap...very common they die by drying out(get too hot...),if 'nice' they blow a hole though the side or end to SHOW you, 'hay--I no good'.... I'm happy it was a cheap and fast fix for you !!

Glad it was an inexpensive fix for you. The older units are more durable than the newer ones so do the math; unless you can save money by "upgrading" I would recommend keeping what you have. Women are beginning to start working in the technical service industries; better pay and not stuck in an office or warehouse.

You need to be aware of the refrigerant yYour existing system is using. The two systems I just installed in my house, are R410A. The previous was R22. Totally different compounds, with totally different operational (pressure/temp) curves.

Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest.

R22 can use any old AC refrigerant test gauge set, 410A can generate pressures in excess of 400psi requiring special gauge set and all joint fittings are silver soldered. Was not happy to know that when they changed the Condenser core on our unit.

Getting a complete new unit put in next Tuesday. Man said his crew would be here at 9:00 am. Can't wait to get rid of this money eating antique. Outside unit was put in in 1989. It runs all the time, never shuts off and takes forever to lower the temp in the house a couple of degrees. According to him it is made here in the states.

I bought a GOODMAN air conditioner / gas furnace on e-bay 3 years ago. Installed it myself, then had the local shop come and solder the copper lines together, pull vacuum and check gas pressure ( gas is stored in the OUTSIDE UNIT).... they just pull vacuum on the a-coil and lines........ Worked out great !
GOODMAN is a large USA manufacturer.. They sell to others and resold under several Brand Names..

I had a Goodman furnace and AC unit. It worked good but after 17 years furnace was shot, heat exchanger was cracked wide open sending exhaust into the house. Air conditioner was still working but decided to have the whole system replaced at the same time with a Bryant. So far so good.
