 Topic: Need a New Battery

6060 has room for 2 batteries, but I have been using just one since the other shorted out. Now is is time to replace it. I am going to stay with just one battery since we don't use the tractor in the winter. Do I buy a deep cycle with 750 MCA or a regular battery with 800 CCA? The regular battery is $50 more expensive.Bill

900 or 1000 CCA is all I would use.

What CCA is the 1 battery you're still using? Does your charging system work? Do you use a maintainer?

Years ago, when I had my 7000, I changed from 2 batteries to one (I used a 4DLT). it was about the same price as two regular batteries, fit in the battery tray nicely and started the tractor much better. I wonder how many times a tractor with 2 batteries is starting on 1, because of poor connections on terminals on one?

all I know is my Buda diesel A-C forklift starts a LOT better with TWO batteries than just one....

Food for thought; some info on the differences between CCA and MCA battery ratings:
CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) is tested at 0°F
and is the number of cranking amps the battery will deliver for 30 seconds
CA Cranking amps and MCA (Marine Cranking Amps) are tested
at 32°F.
COLD CRANKING AMPS (CCA)
The CCA rating represents in amps the current
flow the battery can deliver for 30 seconds at 0°F.
without dropping below 1.2 volts per cell (total of 7.2 volts for a 12-volt
battery). The higher the number, the more amps it can deliver to crank an
engine.
MARINE CRANKING AMPS (MCA)
Batteries designed for marine use may be rated
at MCA instead of CCA. The MCA rating method measures battery output at 32°F.,
not 0°F. Typically a battery's MCA rating will be one-third
higher than its CCA rating would be.
To compare two batteries when one has an MCA
rating and the other has a CCA rating. Multiply the CCA rating by 1.3 for the
equivalent MCA rating. Or, multiply the MCA rating by 0.77 for the equivalent
CCA rating.
Examples:
1000 CCA x 1.3 = 1300 MCA (A marine battery would need a 1300 MCA rating
to be the same as an automotive 1000 CCA battery for use at 0°F)
1000 MCA x 0.77 = 770
CCA (An automotive 770 CCA rated battery will give about the same starting
capacity at 32°F as the 1000 MCA rated battery.
It will lack the deep cycle ability of the marine hybrid battery to run
trolling motors, pumps, etc.) Since it has been starting with one battery, I would go with the one Group 31 battery, if it will fit. Those generally run 900 to 1000 CCA. And around here the price is better than the price of many smaller ones.

Whatever battery you get, put it on a trickle charger for 24-36 hours and put a deep charge into it. It'll last a lot longer if you do.

Thank you all, off to Sams in hopes of finding a Group 31. Tractor supply doesn't have one in stock. Then I'll charge it before installing.
