so last sunday I was planting alfalfa and it was pretty dusty and the then the tractor started chattering pretty badly and I found that the hose clamp holding the intake hose on the turbo snapped in half and the hose popped off and was sucking dirt pretty badly. I had only been planting for about 45 mins. my question is what new turbo would be the best for it? I am hoping to avoid cheap chinese garbage, is there a "mordern" upgrade that works well or should I be looking for a reman garett? Thanks

WHICH HOSE ?? The 3 inch diameter hose that goes over the radiator?? or the smaller 2 inch hose that crosses over the top of the valve cover ??

If it was the 3" hose, I would be more concerned about engine than turbo. Turbo will stand more dirt than engine. MACK

the hose that came undone was the main intake hose coming from the filter, I am not concerned about the engine as we had the same exact thing happen to a IH 5288 we owned we just replaced the turbo changed filters and oil and away it went for 6000+ hours before we sold it at 11,000 hours. again my question is should I be looking for a more efficient modern turbo or should I stick with a reman of what it has?

Stick with what it has. It's an efficient engine and already pushing out 150hp (at the flywheel) from 301 cu inches. That's pretty good for a tractor engine, especially of that era. I would spend your money on buying a quality unit designed for it. A bad turbo can take out an entire engine. Check with your local diesel shops, they can usually get you a factory reman from AirResearch/Garrett turbo for a reasonable price. I had to do that on my 7000 10 or so years back when a tree limb caught the muffler and broke the exhaust housing on the turbo.

I had my turbo rebuilt at a turbo shop.
