1940 B that we were pretty pleased with has started to idle and run great then suddenly choke down and kill, but start right back up again. Seems like maybe governor is advancing spark? killing it but resetting after it dies. While looking at the governor the rod that runs from the governor to the carb butterfly has a hole in it for a spring that is missing but we are struggling with where this spring should attach on the top. Does it attach to anything specific and is it directional ? as it seems to line up directly under the manifold and there are not many options to chose from.  Any help greatly appreciated. We are using missing part as starting point as figured needed to be done anyway.

The long hook of the surge spring is looped over the top stud forward of center of the manifold,
If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits.
If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY

If it sits and idles nice, and runs great and then just dies but starts back up again, it sounds to me like a fuel delivery problem or an Ignition problem. Especially if its Mag fired.  If its a Mag, and you have a remote kill switch up at the drivers seat, disconnect that wire running from the Mag and see if it stops shutting off. If it does, there's your problem. Bad Mag kill switch.

To check for a fuel delivery issue, disconnect the fuel line at the elbow of the Carburetor and put a clean jar under the line and let it run for a minute or two. If there's good uninterrupted flow coming from the tank, that would rule out delivery from the tank to the Carb. Look in the bottom of the jar for debris and dirt. Tank might need a cleaning. Still doesn't mean that maybe the inlet cavity of the Carb has debris in it, but if there isn't any fuel overflow from stuck floats, I'd move on to checking out the ignition..

Thanks to both responses, Paul by forward I am assuming you mean towards front of tractor, corerct? And yes Steve I am wondering about fuel also.  Just trying to eliminate possible causes along the way, did not know there was supposed to be a spring here as never had need to look at governor.
