Hi. I was wondering if anyone could give me advice on antifreeze. I want to flush and refill the coolant in my G. In automotive, there are a couple of different types and colors, depending on if you have a Ford or a GM or an import etc. As I understand it, it depends on the various alloys used in the coolant system and the different additives and inhibitors that are recommended by the manufacturer.
There are a few different choices at my local auto parts supplier. What would be a good choice for an old Allis, including my G. Thanks.

Dex-cool (orange) is still a thing for GM, but looking at what's available at my local Fleet Farm, everything else seems to be "universal" (traditional green).  Not sure if store brand vs. name brand makes any difference...  If I know the coolant is going to be in there for "awhile", I typically go with the Prestone (green) concentrate and mix 50/50 with distilled water.  Retail offerings and preferred mixes may be different in your neck of the woods...

The ORIGINAL GREEN is from the 1950 - 1980 era.. BASIC antifreeze... Then they made the EXTENDED LIFE YELLOW to replace it... 5 years or 100,000 miles.. It is a DIRECT REPLACEMENT for the green........... That is your best bet.

In the last 20 years they have changed the antifreeze to various forms that are NOT COMPATABLE with the  GREEN or EXTENDED life YELLOW.. These would include  DEXCOOL and various forms of FOREIGN AUTO DESIGN... Dont matter what is claims on the bottle, they are NOT compatable with the YELLOW or GREEN...  Ever heard stories about someones antifreeze changing to Jello and screwing up the motor.. That is what happens when you mix DEXCOOL with GREEN/ YELLOW.

Just go with the "standard"  Extended life YELLOW and you are in good shape... If you prefer the older GREEN, that is fine, but it does not have the long life expectancy.
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

This is the good stuff... but i would NOT put it in a GM car with original DEXCOOL, or a new Foreign car.

What is the reason you want to change the antifreeze? It it's not contaminated, you can buy additives that replace the anticorrosion/lubricating properties. Antifreeze never looses it's ability to prevent freezing.

I routinely add Motorcraft additive in my Powerstroke, per Ford's recommendation. I am sure there are additives that are just as good or maybe even better, but I use what Ford recommends, so there will be no warranty issues.

There are, also, test strips available to test the coolant. According to one product "
  • Quick and effective way to prevent coolant system damage
  • Measures coolant freeze point, boil point and pH levels of 6, 7, 7.5, 8 and 11.
  • Test works with both ethylene and propylene glycol-based coolants
  • Detects acid build-up which can cause leaks and damage to engine cooling components
  • Cannot be used on orange or red fluids

I want to change the coolant because the tractor is fairly new to me and I have no idea how old it is. Also, while green, yellow or orange might all be acceptable, I must have a new formulation because mine is brown. Wink I would also like it to test lower than it currently tests. It gets cold around here. Not Winnipeg cold, but plenty cold enough.

I like to keep things simple.  I know it may cost a little more but I like to use the pre-mixed stuff.  Antifreeze and distilled water already mixed together in the correct proportions.  Poor it straight from the jug into the radiator.  Done.

Brown means it has RUST and CRUD inside.. Drain it and refill with water... Run it 10 minutes, then drain and fill again.. Not a good way to FLUSH this system unless you pull a freeze plug... Couple drains and refills will work.. ADDATIVES are good to keep the DIESEL antifreeze fresh... In a gasoline motor, you drain and refill... The capacity is low, not worth trying to "save" the old antifreeze.

Ya brown is bad rust and crud probably stop leak added in. Drain refill add radiator flush and run till hot ref lush with plain water then refill with 50/50 premix. I'd use whatever you use in your other vehicals. As said don't mix dexicool with anything.
