I seen in a post about being able to put tractor in gear with the hand clutch forward, then pulling back to go obviously. Mine will not go into gear unless clutch is pushed down, hot or cold oil doesn't matter. Does that mean there is a problem with the hand clutch adjustment?? |

Not really, I have a couple of tractors that can be shifted with the hand clutch if the timing is right. I have a couple others that are real tight that can't be shifted with the hand clutch. For me it is about a 50/50 deal, when the stars and the planets align it works, other times not. I don't make a practice of doing it, but every now and then it works.

It's more like if you can shift gears with hand clutch it's way to loose. They all have too much drag to let tranny stop if set correctly.

Usually the drag is caused by the oil the clutch runs in acting somewhat like a torque converter in an automatic transmission. The secret to a hand cluch shift is to not hesitate in neutral to give the torque converter tendency time to work. Get it out of one gear and into the other with no hesitation. And be sure the tractor is stopped before shifting.

I can't shift my 45 from neutral to any gear but if it's already in a gear I can shift to another gear ok.

Like Ted says, no hesitation. The tractor has to be in gear, release the hand clutch, stop the wheels with the brakes, one swift move from 2nd to reverse, and engage the hand clutch. I've done it for 30 years on my 45 while plowing snow and the hand clutch is set correctly and does not slip. I can plow with 3-14 SC plow at half throttle in 3rd gear.
If the tractor is in neutral, it will not work. You will just grind off the splines on the shifting collar and the gear hub. Edited by CTuckerNWIL - 29 Oct 2010 at 12:39pm |

Like you say no hesitation because it was not intended for shifting with the hand clutch.Been around mine and dad's for more than 30 years and never needed shift with hand clutch, foot clutch much faster and better than slamming into gears. We never had 3 bottoms only 4,16's semi mount and pulltype. But it's your equipment not mine no big deal to me.

I'd better clear up that we pulled 4,16's with a 45diesel and a 45diesel repowered with rebuilt D19 gas wich could pull it in 3rd but used 2nd when plowing all day.I took it as the guy thought you should be able to shift normaly like you do with the foot clutch not have to do this or that my answer to him would be no you can't and drag is perfectly normal just like when they rolled of the assembly line.We keep hand clutch tight there is nothing worse than trying to get work done with a slipping clutch.
