I've been having a great time for a couple of weeks with my 170. I picked up a new distributor cap and rotor, and when installing them, noticed the #2 plug wire was corroded. Off to buy some plug wires. Put all of the new stuff on, and oddly the tractor would not fire on all cylinders. Worse it was firing on any three, although 2 and 4 were most often out of commission. I started switching wires, without success. Went to Napa and picked up some NGK plugs. Same problem. Messed with wires and plugs for several nites, but no success. Sometimes #4 would be dead, sometimes #2 and occasionally #3.
The tractor was running fine before I fixed it! What the devil was it trying to do to me!!!! #!#!$#$
Last night I got new points and a condeser and opened up the distributor. The little nut on the points was just a bit loose! I changed the points and condenser, tightened up things and now it runs on all 4 cylinders. I think the mechanical advance might be stuck, so will look at that tonight, but I just about turned my gray hair grayer over this thing. So soon old, so late smart!
