I have a series III with live pto.The pto seal leaking so I took plate off
To get to seal.The pto shaft moves up and down about 1\8" .What is going on here?What am I getting in to get fixed? Thanks, Chris |

Question: This movement you mention, is it movement by hand, meaning with the engine off, can you move it that much? or does it move that much, with the tractor running and PTO engaged? Can you feel a surging, in the PTO lever, as you engage/disengage PTO?

Movement by hand when off,if you hold the engagement lever all the way forward or back it tightens up.Is this normal

Its a long shaft, with a short coupler, up front, so movement by hand is normal. Spin the outboard bearing, see if it feels gritty, or unusual. I wouldn't worry about it too much...

The pto shaft is 2 parts, the one that sticks out that you hook things to, is short. It goes into a damper housing, then there is a long shaft that goes from that damper housing to the fly wheel/engine crank.
That damper housing has 2 fiber, half moon like, parts. They were missing on my D-10, and I could not find any, new or used. Somewhere I fount one, needs two. I did find some martial to make them. I would think that you better take the PTO cover housing off and check things out. If you find that you need a pair of those, parts book calls them dampers, I can make you a pair. Dusty
