I assume that's what this is...nasty little seed balls on the ground but a nice looking tree otherwise. Would not want in my yard but how about shade tree at the pond? Are there better oak choices? Neat shaped leaves.

Just plant something. Everybody told me that same thing Oaks take forever. And I have never planted one on propose yet.
![]() ![]() ![]() Nobody knows how long we are going to last,so don't worry about it. You have a spot by the pond you want to sit in the shade plant something. If like most things you will look back and say dang that little 10 year old tree is making shade, and then you start counting and it is even longer ago.

Personally, I really like the Burr Oak as a wilderness tree. Fantastic looking trees. If you like it - plant it and get it started. You can always plant a soft maple or something fast growing nearby that can be removed when the oak is of suitable size.

Plant a couple of northern Pecan trees. You may not get anything from them, but your ancestors will. They make far better shade trees than an oak. I've got a huge oak in my front yard, I am always picking up sticks from it. I've also got a couple of northern pecans started.

I thought Burr Oak avenue was another name for 127th street up Chicago way.. I grew up on 111th street and Crawford avenue . Saw the first light of day on May 28 1940. That makes me 80 years young with a fair to good memory of growing up on Chicago's Last Farm . Box Elder Bugs and all.

That sounds more like a Sweet Gum tree. Spiney seed balls that become sharp little rockets when you mow. I thought I wanted a buckeye tree until I visited a guy in Ohio that had a couple in his yard, at least I can eat pecans. |

JW, that was my first thought when Steve mentioned the spiney seed balls. Best thing you can do with a sweetgum is cut it down as soon as possible and poison the stump.

I agree with Hubert. We had one at the first house we owned. It was right next to the front deck and those spiney little balls were a PITA. After we moved, our new neighbor had one and I mowed their yard for them a few times. Those balls are everywhere!!

There are a few pecan trees around here----I have 2 that are 12 years old and 8 feet tall----they will never make nuts in my lifetime but they do make a bit of shade---not many leaves to deal with in the fall either.

I have both Oaks and Sweet Gums on my East Texas location. Sweet Gums got to go. Waiting for a logger to sell them to. The basket company in Jacksonville uses Gum cut thin to make their wood baskets. Can't think of any other good use for a Sweet Gum Tree. Can't make good firewood because it is impossible to split. Back in the day of big open face fireplaces a large piece of Sweet Gum log was used as a back log.

I've been trying to get a White oak in my yard for many years My daughter picked up a bucket of acorns from Moms place 11 years ago' planted in my yard had 15 trees make it 2 winters. then the rabbits found them killed off all but 1 its about 7 feet tall now last fall it took lots of damage it a windstorm. I lost 45 other trees at the same time. I patched it back up with grafting sealer and duct tape. Ill never see it as a shade tree but some one will some day. the flaming willow I planted at the same time has grown to 25 feet been wind damaged and trimmed down a couple times and is back to 25 feet.

It's a town just about three miles from me at the farm.
GREAT place to eat, is at Rumors Bar & Grill. Coordinates: ![]() Coordinates at the farm... 44.069160 -91.095880 I've got a WHOLE BUNCH of them at the farm. Mostly oaks and cedars. I'm planting some maples and spruce trees to add to the shade and beauty. If you're gonna be in the area, just PM me and ask for my cell number. You're ALWAYS welcome. |
