Was there a "field" use for the  7'th gear; 4'th gear/low range ?? Now that I think about it, how about the D series Wink Thanks

10+ Mph in the field?  I've never done that!  4th Gear in general is more of a road gear be it high or low range to me.

At about 1/2 throttle, or 5MPH I used to rake hay to initially turn it over to dry better.  I did wish for a 5 speed many times for more speed selections.

I just assumed that there was a reason for that particular "gear" LOL !! I can understand the 8'th/road gear though, perhaps 7'th was easier on the driveline to get there ??
What about rotary hoe work ?? I've been told that the "faster-the better" ??

Spent most of today on a D17, 4th gear low range raking.....maybe 1/4 throttle. 3rd gear hi, full throttle, as the field got "smaller"

We used to pull a 4-section drag cart in 4th low with the D17.

I doubt the engineers had 4th in mind when they came up with the concept of 2 speeds in one gear. It was for more selection in "field gears". Fourth just benefited as a tag along.

When I "hit the road" with my XT, I have never, ever, took off in fourth gear high range (aka,8th gear). I'll always get rolling in 7th gear, then put the PD ahead for 8th gear. Seems a little easier on everything, especially if you have much of anything behind you. So, with that being said, in my mind, 7th gear has a purpose. Darrel

On a D series 4th low is just right for carrying hay bales around in the field or when pulling loads on hills up and down on the  road it was handy to shift to low range. On the 100 series the ratio between high and low was too close not nearly as useful.

Dad used to round bale at lower throttle speed in 4th low with his XT. We used to rake in 4th low with the D17 and for starting a load on the road, 4th low worked better than starting in high. I agree with Darrel, 4th low had a purpose and it worked good.
