    Posted: 30 Dec 2016 at 9:06am
I'm looking for some understanding and solutions about my AC 190xt. When I am steering the tractor, the steering wheel jerks back to the middle. I can still steer but it takes a lot of effort to make the thing steer, and it continues to jerk back to the center. The problem seems worst when steering to the left. I am new to the AC world, so far I have loved this tractor and hope to keep it a long time. Anyone have an idea about this issue?

Pump may be sucking air. Low on oil. Check the dip stick on left between your feet.    MACK

I had a. Similar issue with my Xt, but mine was just intermittently notchy when turning the wheel in either direction not the return to center as you are indicating. If you put the tractor 4th gear and pull back on the power director in low range does the trans slip or or surge like the power director is slipping? in my case, both issues was happening. The o~ring and seal in the front of the hydrolic pump were bad. $20 in parts and it resolved both issues. If your not having the power director issue, try bleeding the steering cylinder by loosing the hose connector at each end while a friend turns the wheel one at a time to remove air. They supposivly are selve bleeding by turning the steering wheel lock to lock several times. But this did help mine before I replaced the seal and o~ring for a short period of time. Just my 2 cents.

looking for help myself , I put the tractor a 190xt in shop over the winter to redo , I removed the oil cooler and replaced hydraulic lines from pump to cooler changed filter and oil, plus cleaned the screen in the sump, for some reason now it’s hard to steer and the pump is making a squealing noise, all worked good when I put it in shop
Very frustrating

You didn't prime the pump.  Hope you didn't fry your pump with it squealing.  Undo the feed line at the bottom of the pump and pour some oil in it.  Put it back together and it should work after that.

When I got my xt, the power steering was ok as long as you didn’t turn it in either direction fast. If you tried to turn it fast, it got difficult. It turned out to be the priority valve in the pump was 3/4 plugged with debris. Cleaned out and was good as new. Probably not your problem, but something to check.

Chad 190XT: if it didn't do this squealing before you worked on it, you have lines/hoses not connected properly or too small of replacement line/hose. Squealing means the relief valve is bypassing due to some sort of blockage. The two connections at the rear of the pump are crossed, meaning the inside port goes to the oil cooler, not the outside port. There is a slight chance if you didn't clean out the new hose properly, now the orbitrol has something in it plugging an oil passage inside. This is a very slight possibility, but I have seen it before.

Tearing apart a hydrostatic power steering orbitrol isn't for a novice technician. You can easily get it reassembled wrong and when you start the engine the steering wheel will spin like an airplanes prop !!!  Are you absolutely sure you have things reconnected the same as it was??? and the new lines/hoses are large enough ???

The hose I changed was from the pump to the cooler and it was same size as the one I took off and back in same spot, now I have no squealing in pump and now no steering , a friend had a orbtol from one of his tractors and we installed and now can’t even turn the wheel , I’ve unhooked the line going to steer cylinder and fluid flows out like it’s bypassing and we double checked the hook ups on the orbital, could the orbital be bad
Thank you

In 45 years of repair, I've NEVER replaced and orbitrol on an Allis tractor.

You said you unhooked the (line) going to steering cylinder. Did you have oil out both lines or just one?            MACK
