I have a Cub - the light switch on the later Cub's have a spring like wire between two of the contacts. What does that do?

Sounds like it's a resistor.  I'm not sure of the reason.

Could also be the resistor for "Dim" headlights.  All Farmalls have Hi/Low headlights.
If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits.

As Jay mentioned, Hi or Lo charge; also mentioned the HI was for Field work and Lo was for Road use, less blinding the oncoming traffic.
6 volt or 12 volt?

When lights are on, generator field goes to high charge to compensate for lights-on draw.
Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest.
