Broke down my D17 series 1 couple days ago, and found a couple of problems with it...
This a view of sleeve one looking down from top. The wrist pin had been installed correctly, but put in the sleeve backward, enabling the pin to drag the sleeve wall, scoring it badly, but I intended to replace all sleeves anyway. The next picture is my main problem now.... When I removed the crankshaft main caps, the center one is supposed to be in one piece, not two...does anyone know where I can get another center main cap, it has the thrust bearing? Will I have to line bore the block now? Thanks Andy |

I've got an early series bare block that I would sell. $200.00. Central Iowa location.

Doc, Just curious.....why another block......you think this one is damaged as a result of the broken main bearing cap? Or, maybe the chances of finding just the cap may be futile?

Brian, I suspect Dr. Allis doesn't thing I should spend $400 plus dollars line boring my block. Lynn has offered me a block for $200 (Thanks, Lynn, for the offer), but he's a 10 and half hour drive away one way and I think it would be cheaper to line bore...still looking for options. Andy

When a cap looks like that, what do the mating surfaces on the block look like with the cap moving around?? How about the stress that has been put on the threaded main cap bolt holes?? You cannot buy a new cap from AGCO. Who would want sell a main cap from a perfectly good used block?? No One. I am fortunate to be able to find a block within an hour of home if I needed one.
For all you know your crankshaft may be cracked or worn beyond undersized bearing limits.

So.....I guess for both of the reasons I mentioned. I know even cast iron can be stressed and warped under the right conditions.

What do you mean when you say "put the sleeve in backwards"?
No doubt it is in pretty bad shape. |

Thanks Tucker and Lonn for explaining it for me. Lonn, I'm gonna have to have the machine shop check the rod and see if it is straight...you guys won't believe all the things I'm finding on this project...and it's rapidly becoming a real project...
