I stumbled into a 175D with bad motor. I got a gear jumping D17 series 1. Are transmissions interchangeable? I’ve heard 17s and 175 had some parts compatibility.

Your front end/eng will bolt to the 175 - that is the good news, the bad news is there were 2 different 175's one had a driven pump from the front of the engine, the earlier versions had a pump driven off a hollow shaft with the pump in front of the brakes.
The difference is also in the pressure plate - one splined and the other not. All of this can be over come with some engineering. IF you just bolt from the trans rearward you will have a three point and slightly faster gearing - some one will correct me if wrong. The best thing would be to use to 175 torque housing and make a Gas 175. Now there is another issue in the length of the trans input shaft ... you might have to do some work there as well. The adaptor on the rear of your gas engine is needed. You may also have some power steering issues to deal with as well. You need to decide which way and how much to swap - then you will get lots of suggestions that are as ez as falling off a log - ha.... |

I had a friend trying to do some swapping between different series D17 gas and diesel and ran into input shaft issues.

Some of the internal transmission parts could be swapped between housings, but not all of them. That's a lot of work to tear down a 175 rear end just to harvest transmission parts to install in an old D-17 rear end. Be much cheaper to just buy a new aftermarket 3rd gear and shift coupling for the D-17. The 175 has slower geared final drives, so it takes more engine RPM's or bigger rear tires to have the same ground speeds as a D-17, unless your D-17 only has 14.9 x 28 rear rubber. Installing the D-17 gas engine into a 175 chassis might not be difficult at all. The older side mount hydraulic pumps hollow shaft drive is the same p/n for 170/175 gas or diesel !! The clutch shaft is a different p/n, but if the pump drive is the same, there can't be much difference in the clutch shaft length I wouldn't think. For the newer front driven hydraulic pump you'd need a series 3 or 4 D-17 crank pulley to be able to connect the drive shaft hub. Using the entire 175 rear end onto an old D-17 leaves you with a 3-point hitch that needs 2,000 psi to operate and you have a "non-live" 3700 psi hydraulic pump. Tell me where the 175 is located and I have an F-2 turbo diesel engine I can install in it and then that would be a tractor !!!!

Just rebuild the Perkins diesel in the 175. There are millions of those engines out there, so parts are cheap. Good reliable and fuel efficient engines.

Series 4
Not saying that won’t happen. Hopefully this week I’ll see the 175 and have a clearer path forward. |

How can you be sure the tranny is good if it doesn't run?
