Happy Groundhog Day to everyone. I never have understood why anyone would celebrate one of those critters though.

What we called "woodchucks" would play hell on dairy in upstate NY.
Drop a front tractor tire into a hole and it would get your attention PDQ, let alone shear off a hub on loaded hay or forage wagon or mess up the cutterbar when you hit their dirt mound with the haybine.
Neighbor growing up had a place to keep a rifle on every old JD he had and was a crack shot into his 70's.
Watched him pull the clutch back once, stand up and grab that rifle out of the leather "holster" and pick one off from a good distance.
We had Dachshunds on the farm and they could tear up a big one pretty good. Took em' a while to kill it but they never gave up until they did!

Had a neighbor who's dad shot the last know wild buffalo in the county. Years later, the neighbor was asked by a man who raised buffalo if he would like to follow in his fathers footsteps. Seems he had a buffalo that needed to be put down and asked the neighbor if he wanted to do it. He drove to the mans place on his John Deere with his gun.

Once the job was done, the gun was leaned against the wf of the tractor. The two men were talking and the gun was forgotten. The neighbor also forgot he chambered another round. The vibration of the tractor started the gun moving. It fell and went off putting a hole though the radiator of the tractor.

The long standing joke was he shot a deer and a buffalo in the same day. True story.

I know this has nothing to do with groundhogs, but carrying a gun on the John Deere made me think of it.

For a time, our family farm didn't have a tenant living in the old house.  Groundhogs moved into/under the old corn crib.  My grandpa and grandma would ride out to the farm in their 1968 Chevy C-10 pickup.  Grandma had a 410 gauge Ithaca shotgun.  Would lean outside of the rider side window and shoot groundhogs.  Got two with one shot once.  She was only 57 at the time, and a pretty good shot. Wink

Miserable rodent is only right 42% of the time. A coin toss is 50-50. You stand a better chance of being right than it does.
I need more than 200 characters for my "signature." I'd love to see that changed to 250!

I find that groundhogs are right about as often as the average weather forecaster, who, I think, also live underground as I can usually be more accurate by just lookin' outside!!
