With the PTO engaged, when you let out on the clutch to move the rearend seems to bound up. It pulls the motor slightly and then you hear and feel  it break loose . Only does it with pto, any ideas. Thanks, JM.

It is the hydraulic pump building pressure to pop the bypass valve open.

Man I'm glad you posted on this. And Tucker you must have forgot my post on the same very thing just a few days ago. I can't believe Allis or their customers would have put up with this. Its real annoying to me. I've said before the CA is a real sweet platform for a small 20 something HP tractor but they really missed the boat by not putting a true live engine driven pump on it.

It was designed in the late 40's, you do realize that?  When it came out in 1950 no one else had a live pto(except oliver as dickL pointed out, I am not familar with them), or even a hand clutch/foot clutch combo like the CA to work around that, it was advanced for the time.  Allis customers put up with it and liked it.

John Deere didn't get live pto/hydraulics until 52, farmall 52 although live pto wasn't until 53 I think.

IH or JD didn't have power adjust wheels

They didn't have a draft sensitive hitch or quick coupling hitch.  They didn't have the power to weight ratio.  So how did allis miss the boat?

I'm aware of all that you say. I'm sure technology was moving fast at that time and just a few years meant alot of change. I guess it was a matter of timing bring out the CA in 50 and just 2-3 yrs later true live hyd was available on other models. Can't really say much about the hitch because Ford was way ahead on that but the power to weight thing......yep they were king there. I do like the fact that Allis put must of the cast iron over the rear wheels.

Our 1949 Oliver had a live power take off. If you bought the hydraulic system with the tractor it was live as well driven off the power take off shaft that turns as long as the engine runs.

The 3pt and its semi copies such as the eagle hitch, where not "way ahead"  The are hard to hook up, the draft control is lousy compared to a snap coulpler, and they were designed more of a way to keep from getting killed instead of a way to help things along.  The only comparable hitch to the snap coupler was the IH fast hitch brought out a few years later.  The only reason the 3 point became the standard is because the patents ran out on it first and IH refused to license JD to put the fast hitch on their new generation tractor.  The 4010 gained such a foot hold, along with ford and case producing them, that it became the standard, not because it was better in anyway.
