I am restoring a D17 Series I that I inherited from my dad. It has a leak in the power steering. I cannot find where to add power steering fluid on this tractor. Can anyone help me with this problem? Rod

Behind the grill on the right there should be a screw in cap. If you look down inside you should see some teeth of a gear, I fill mine so that it's just covering the gear

The filler is behind the grill screen, on the right side, facing the tractor.

The operator's manual says to fill 5/8" above the top of the sector gear.

Mine has a riser tube in the fill hole, about 2 - 3 inches long with a cap on top, appears to be factory. The manual steering one has the plug in the hole. And they would use different fluid depending on the type.
But yep, it is behind the grill screen. Take out the two screws and the grill lifts off.

If you don't know where the leak is, fill it with brake fluid. I'll cause the seal to swell enough to stop the leak. Leon

IF you are going to restore the tractor, find the leak and fix it. That's part of restoring!

I do not believe this is good advice! I once worked on a snow plow where someone had added brake fluid to the hydraulic system........the congealed mess was unbelievable.
I also once worked on a floor jack where someone had also added brake fluid......same mess there!
From my experience, alcohol based brake fluid and petroleum based hydraulic fluid are not compatible.

I need to fix it right as I am going to restore it. I spent about two hours this afternoon scraping and blowing 40 + years of grease off that area. Does this cap have a tube running through it? Do I have to take the hood shroud off to get to it? The area I should be looking is opposite the generator correct? I know I sound stupid but this is my 11th tractor and this one is a mess. Take the GRILL off. My series III has a vent tube attached to the plug. Use a wrench and grab the BOTTOM of this tube/plug thing.

This photo is of a D14 with power steering but yours should look the same.

Thank you for the picture. This clears up a lot. I am looking in the wrong place. The tractor was being used to bushhog a pasture when a small tree punched a hole in the bottom line hence the leak. Need to get fluid in it to get it to my fix it man to patch the line. Rod
