I used Indian Head shellac when I put the hydraulic oil pan on the D 15 . It didn't hold the gasket as well as I'd hoped . Maybe because it's old, I dunno . Just wondered what you fellas use ? Thanks

CNH makes a gasket glue that works amazingly well.
I can't remember the name of it but the Case mechanics call it "calf snot"
A little CQB never hurt anybody.

Get the best Copper Coat. Costs more but it's more than worth it. Make sure surface is clean and free of oil.

lay the pan on a piece of plywood, mark and drill all holes. then place gasket on plywood, and smear the top surface with blue goo. (blue silicone) Go lightly with the blue goo, you really don't want any squeeze out...  place pan on top, and put all bolts through holes, to align.  If you have longer bolts, to go through the pan and plywood, use them, and tighten them down till everything is flat.  You really don't want to over torque these.  If you don't have longer bolts, clamp the pan to the board, or weight down the pan.  This way the gasket stays with the pan, to make assembly easier...Wink

I always Use Indian Head and have had zero problems when the directions are followed. You can't hardly get it back apart after it has set up.

As a side note they now call it "lion". I guess "Indian Head" was too politically incorrect.

Hi Tack is the best. Copper Coat works better for antiseze than it does for gasket sealer.

An fashion way to keep gasket in place with pan is to use string and tie the gasket in several places.   When bolting it up place bolts and start them into block.  Once you have several bolts in place cut string and pull out one at a time as start bolt in the string hole.  This is an old mechanic trick from the 50's and 60's   This is with an in frame  overhaul.

Copper Coat makes the best headgasket sealer. Copper Coat also makes antiseize. Same brand 2 different products. Like Hi tack it is also made by permatex.

What many refer to as Calf Snot we also called Gorilla Snot in the truck industry, was a contact adhesive slight yellowish in color applied to both the gasket and the part to attach to. We used it on oil pan gaskets on the large engines to get them to Stay where we put them, almost took a grinder or sanding discs to get back off after a few months.

I use Indian Head myself. Never have a problem unless it's really old. Gotta let it tack up a little before install. Lion is a different brand.

Yes ! That is yellow stuff we used in the mid 70's. Personally, I would NEVER use.the blue silicon. Use the Clear. If it squishes out anywhere, it is hardly noticeable. If the blue squishes out it draws attention to the repair and looks like crap. Just personal preference.
sometimes I walk out to my shop and look around and think "Who's the idiot that owns this place?"
