Was mowing with AC WD tractor and throttle went wide open. I quickly shut engine off. Pulled governor out. It was mutilated(see pic). Installed replacement governor(see pic). Spring looks good(see pic). Started tractor and still run at wide open. What should I be looking for next?

Tom, There is approx. 1/16 inch horizontal movement.
Enjoyed your pictures of the history & restoration of your WC. One other Allis I have is Dad's 52 WD that he bought in 1953. I plan to restore it one of these days.

What about any camshaft gear teeth damage and small governor weight pieces down inside ????

Dr.Allis.....Teeth looked good on cam gear and original governor mating gear. Found most of damaged parts in governor housing when disassembling.     one pin clip unaccounted for and it's possible some small weight pieces and that clip may have found their way to the oil pan. Tractor runs well if I manually control linkage from governor on left side of engine. Still at a loss in figuring out way it wants to run wide open.

I would double/triple check my rods and springs. It's easy to get one turned around backwards when putting back together.

isnt there a roll pin to attach the governor fork to the shaft going out?  did it shear it?  or partially shear changing the geometry?

What the problem was (according to the Tractor mechanic that fixed it) that this tractor having a Zenith carburetor has the linkage adjustment (from gov to carb on left side of engine) on the carburetor itself rather than bending the rod which is common to tractors with a Marvel carburetor) was synced with the original Governor which he suspects may have been wearing out and previous owners had set the carb to keep it running. So when a new governor was introduced it threw things out of adjustment so he adjusted the Zenith carburetor to match the replacement governor.

Used tractor one season after this repair and the same thing happened again. So I replace the governor assembly again with one from another parts tractor I have.
It wasn't long after this governor let loose and engine jumped timing for some reason. I decided this time I'd pull the front cover off the engine and see what's going on.
What I found was that some of the disintegrated governor parts were laying at the bottom of the front engine coverr below where the timing gear is and the crankshaft sprocket is. (See attached pics) These were evidently rattling around and getting in the timing gear, the governor gear, and the crank shaft sprocket (gear). (See pics of damaged gear teeth) I also dropped oil pan and found lots of pieces in it.
I will be replacing the crankshaft sprocket, timing gear, and Governor assembly with parts off another parts tractor I have.
Moral of experience: if your governor lets loose and upon inspection find that pieces are missing do not assume they are in the oil pan. Pull the front cover off the engine and make sure nothing is in the cover and that all gear teeth are not damaged.

Dan,
 When I took the front cover off of one of the WD's I found the remnants of blown governor weights. They had been riding in there for years! Could have got caught and taken out the gears as yours did at any moment too. I also had another WD engine that was stuck at only one spot. Found it was a broken gear tooth stuck in the cam gear. I was lucky I didnt try to force it any more, till I took the front cover off!
Good thing you have some parts tractors too!

My D-17 had a blown up governor when I bought it. In the course of fixing it I dug not one but TWO sets of weights out of it!Been running it for a couple of years now, seems to have made it through without a problem.

Thanks for all information and understanding.  I'll let y'all know when I get it back together.  Not sure if I will have time to work on it before going south for the winter (Summerdale, Al. area).  My son solicitated my help to man the scales at the organic grain facility he manages for rest of harvest season.
