I looked at a 1950 WD today and it had a 4 bolt front end. The guy who has it is the original owner and says as far as he can remember he didn't change the front end out but his memory isn't what it used to be. What year did they start using a 4 bolt because I have a 3 bolt on my WD45? |

The 4 bolt front end did not come out until the WD45 series, i think sometime in 1954. Without consulting Swinford's AC bible, I can't be anymore exact.

I'd say the four bolt came out later than '54, probably about the time the '45 diesel was introduced.

Lonn I had a 54 that had the 3 bolt frontend and a 55 with a 4 bolt. they often made switches mid years. also I have no history on either of these unit and they could have been changed along the way.

A-C converted to the 4 bolt plate on their WFEs with tractor #WD186413 which would make it later in the year 1954.
Interestingly, the diesel was introduced earlier that year with tractor #WD181341.
Maybe the extra weight dictated a heavier setup?

The steering gear change because the diesel was longer. The older 3 bolt gears had a big flat part in the top of the casting the stuck back right where the crank pulley would be on a diesel.
They changed the gears so that the flat part was gone and the steering gear stops right where the hood starts on a gas 45. Before that they stuck back in behind the grille.

That is also very interesting. Norm Swinford's book says the first WD-45D had Ser.#181341. The A-C parts book shows the new front support with the 4 bolt plate started at Ser.#186413. I wonder; were all WD-45Ds between #181341 and #186413 NFEs? The parts book also indicates that a heavier NFE support for the WD-45 and WD-45D was introduced with Ser.#183053. Sometimes I think I tend to over analyse this stuff? LOL |

I should have just told him I would take it when I was there but I didn't because I was leaving town for a few days. He was asking less than the 4 bolt normally sells for and the rims were in great shape also. I'll see if he still has it when I get back on Friday.
