You can buy running dozer for that price. Unless the undercarrage is 100% or something that is a bit high priced.

Just saw a Cat 7u D4 with blade on craiglist $5000 and steering clutches worked on not long ago. Sorry I ant smart  enough to post a link. But San Luis Obispo craiglist farm and garden and put Caterpillar in the search. Three D2's from $2500 to $9000 and a 9u D 6 for $6000. And several other D 4 I am not remebering details on.There are sucker everywhere if you wait long enough and there are some deals to be had with time.

I don't mean to start a agurment about what brand is better, but Caterpillar is still in business and you can still buy 80% of the parts for the tractor they made in the 1950's from them. As well as more after market parts as they made more machine to need parts for. So in my mind that make a Cat brand worth a bit more at this time.

It is partly that crawler tractors where used farming all over California so there are a lot more of them around here. It has been ever time I have needed to fix some thing on my D6 it has been cheaper to just buy another. I think 6 came as complete machines and 3 more a only parts a pieces had been removed already. But only one did I pay more than $2500 for. So as in real estate location, location, location, I guess.

Have not been near so successful with HD 5's. But my cousin had to move so he gave 3 carcusses all without engines but 2 nice sets of tracks. And tracks is what my pet HD 5 needs real bad.

I gave 4500 for my 54 AC HD5B tracks are better than 98% of the equipment I run at work. Put a starter button on it fuel and a HD truck battery in it. Started it up and put it on a trailer. Not perfect by any means but a good base for a restoration and i can use it while i gather parts for it. Also came with all the books for it including the one for the baker blade. I dont know either way if it was a good price but for me I saved the dozer from the bone yard, have something to tinker with when I want to and can put to work when I need to. I personally have never seen any running heavy equipment sell for less than 5k in my area but I suppose those deals do exist.

Problem with CA is the hours limiter they put on use of the old machines. Mel here has to deal with those limiters on his Allis Fleet.

Any HD5 for under $2000 is worth it if you need the parts or like a small machine that is easy to work on if needed .
I have had 4 HD5 machines and still have my HD5G that i bought in 1972
Yes newer machines are nice like my FIAT/ALLIS FD5 - a 70 HP machine with 6 ways bland and powershift - can tell you it does a lot more work that the HD5B I had before .
Can say what you want about CAT - but the D6-9U I had I bought for $4000 ended up 2 years later putting D5 track on it and segmented sprockets for D5 - then put a transmission in it , then started chasing problems - ended up trading it for a HD4 with a backhoe attachment
THE CAT was a money pit and sucked up a lot of $$$$ before calling it ENOUGH

Any machine is worth what your willing to pay for it , not to someone else you always made a BAD DEAL as they know where you could have gotten one for 1/2 the price you paid .
Then you talk to someone else and they say what a great deal you got .
I heard all about the price was to high on the 1955 HD5G I bought in 1972 for $3200 - the next year I eared more than that in a month doing work around here . Bought a Ford tandem dump truck 1955 with a 8 yard box - ran it for couple years then bought the 66 White with 10/12 yard box ..Ford cost me $500 .. White was 3 times the price - still have that truck as well as the HD5G

Good and valid points Coke. Well said. Cost is relative to what you want and what will make you happy.

https://ww2.arb.ca.gov/resources/fact-sheets/use-road-diesel-vehicle-regulation

From this LESS than User Friendly site to negotiate thru.

https://ww3.arb.ca.gov/diesel/mobile.htm

CA the Land of Socialism MANDATED all Trucks older than 2015 models be replaced IN STATE LICENSED, those of Small or limited use owners were put on a miles hours of use limiter, the HE side was reduced to a 200 hours per year Low Use owner or 600 hours average over 3 years. Talk about restrictive and defined as Unconstitutional as to Requiring a person to buy new or newer machines due to a Regulation.

Haha, good one. I am sure that some people are doing so for real. The price of the dozer is a bit high though, in my opinion. You could find way better options on the market, which are much cheaper, being of the same model. Check this online store machinerydealer.co.uk, here you can find the model which you bought, but see how much lower the price is. Next time you'll make a better a research before buying a dozer,
