Been coming here for the last 5 years and finally stuck a young spike elk with my bow . Public ground , walk in only, unguided free range hunt . 1.63 miles from the truck. Me and a friend packed it all out yesterday and waiting for the processor to call me back .
Sorry for the gorey photo |

Congratulations! Quite an accomplishment. Just tagging an elk with a bow is one thing. The public land thing adds another level of difficulty. Packing the meat out could have been a lot worse! The little bit of elk meet I've had I thoroughly enjoyed!

Thanks for all the thoughts guys. It was a heck of a shot really lucky for the most part. 60 yards with a lot of branches in the way but the arrow made it through both lungs and he only made it about a hundred yards.
Joe they really aren't bugling yet still a little early this guy was making some squeals like he was trying to bugle before we caught up with him. We like to go to Utah because it is the earliest easiest and cheapest elk tag to get. Some loggers in the area started a small forest fire yesterday about 2 mi from where I shot this elk. The local fire department in the forest service got right on top of it and they had helicopters airplanes and about a hundred guys working on it to put it out took him most of the day but they got it under control they were still dumping water on it this morning when I drove by. It is dry as can be out here this whole place is a giant Matchstick waiting to go up in flames. Buy some Saving Grace the wind was not blowing yesterday but it had been blowing really hard for the last week. We could have been in a bad situation if that wind was blowing as hard as it was last week thank you to all the firefighters that work for the forest service they do a great job Edited by Pat the Plumber CIL - 21 Aug 2019 at 12:48pm |

where in my back yard ? pretty hot to save the meat this year hope you got it opened up fast, at least the nights have cooled off . dont know why this state has to start these hunts when its so hot but they have so many differant hunts for game instead of a general hunt for each animal but its geared to try and get the youth into hunting for future cash flow . nice kill hope you saved the back two ivory teeth

Lot cooler up at 11000 feet .maybe 70 in the middle of the day and below freezing at night . Cut him up into quarters immediately, into game bags and hang in the shade .Hauled more than 1/2 out our first trip . Everything was iced down in a few hours. Where is Plymouth? Thought the ivories were in upper front and he is too young to develop. I dug some out of a bear kill last year.
We are actually 6 miles South of Wyoming border in No East part of Utah . Fort Bridger and Mountain View Wy. are the closest towns. Edited by Pat the Plumber CIL - 21 Aug 2019 at 1:52pm |
